Or is it the "kids effect", where I try to make them listen to it on decent audio levels... and, when I could take advantage of it, they're asleep, so I can't be loud...?
It's not that my TV's speakers don't work, it's that I'm constantly turning it up and down because of the jacked up sound levels of TV shows and movies - I can NEVER hear the dialogue (so I usually have to have CC on which drives me crazy), but if I turn it up to hear the dialogue the explosions, cars, or general ambient sounds of the show burst my ear drums.
This wouldn't necessarily be fixed with SS speakers, but I could move them closer to where I sit or lay in bed so I wouldn't have to turn the sound up so much.

^ Could be the best option. Better speakers are liable to make dynamic range problems like yours more pronounced. Good headphones could lower background noise enough to hear the low sounds without cranking the volume so much the explosions blow you out of your chair.

'Bout to go to work. I'm training for a new position, and the hours are wonky. 3:30-midnight. Three weeks!

Just finished my second semester as a masters student. I don't have much of a social life but I still have a 4.0 GPA so that I have that going for me.
