Fixing sound card issues. For once in my life, Windows' troubleshooter actually came through. I would have been searching for the problem for....


...about 5 minutes. I initially gave up and ordered a USB sound adapter. Yay Windows troubleshooter!

Was it active in bios?

Did you try installing the manufacturers drivers, not the generic M$ drivers?

It apparently wasn't set as the default sound device. It was strange because all the drivers installed, and all the utilities seemed to work, and the test button in the manufacturer's sound utility worked, but I wasn't getting sound from any regular windows program.

The only "simple" explanation is that if Windows detects more than one audio device, only one can be the default.
It is as simple as switching between them.

Any exclamation marks in device manager? (right click my computer > properties)

Edit: if you're doing a fresh install. Allow a while for all updates, service packs to install before worrying about non essential drivers.
They usually get overwritten anyway by the updated M$ drivers. Then install manufacturer specific drivers off the net (latest)
