So my copy of Dianetics came in the mail literally two minutes ago. Turns out that PDF was missing quite a few pages and I couldn't find the full one. Might create a thread about it or something when I've finished the book, whenever the hell that will be.

Reading on the death of ex-FIFA prezzie Joao Havelange.

The Baton Rouge flood extended to my neighborhood, so my wife, our dog, and I had to bug out on Sunday morning and check into a hotel on higher ground for the past couple of nights. We live in a second-floor apartment, so our stuff is undamaged, but I'm sure most of our ground-floor neighbors lost most of their possessions. And our part of town was not hit nearly as bad as many others. The scale of the problem is mind-boggling: something like 13,000 people in shelters in the affected parishes, multiple road closures choking traffic to a virtual stand-still during certain times of the day, who knows how many businesses and homes under water, and -- most sadly -- at least seven casualties, last I heard. Terrible.

Eleven of the people I work with lost their homes. Several others have dispossessed families staying with them (my immediate supervisor has five other families staying at his place). The one bright spot in all of this mess, of which viewers of the national news are no doubt aware, is the outpouring of volunteer effort that has taken place: people donating food, clothes, toiletries, and any other necessities to the shelters; others conducting search and rescue missions with their own boats.

In the face of so much trouble, it seems petty to report that we are ok. But . . . well, yeah we are. The water has receded from our neighborhood. We'll spend one more night in the hotel and then go home tomorrow.

It's been a hell of a summer in this town.
