It's different in Florida. The fire burns underground, just above the water table, and can last for months, throwing smoke to the wind. I was in Florida, working at Cape Canaveral in '03 or thereabouts, and there was a fire that had been burning for many months, burrowing along like some slow, cheap sci-fi movie monster. There was no way to put it out unless the water table rose 6 FEET due to rain.
