I need some advice.

Walking home from work today, cos it's winter it was dark out. And this man came up to talk to me, the entire street was empty, the sidewalk was hidden from the road by a row of cars parked at the side, the houses on the other side of the sidewalk were dark and either no one's home or they were empty (I live in a rather sketchy place). And I didn't want to be rude because I read somewhere if you piss this kind of guys off they may just get mad and attack you. So I talked to him, and he seemed normal, but he was also like 40/50+, twice my size and not like really fat so I knew I couldn't outrun him if something happened. So he basically walked with me till I got home. Now he knows where I live (well, the apartment building).

He also asked me if I was from the Philippines, it was the first thing he said to me, and I had my scarf up to my eyes with my hood on, so now I'm paranoid that he's seen me at the subway and then only came up to me after following me for some distance, because there was no way he could see enough of my face for him to make that guess (I'm much shorter and had my hood on). He also asked if I lived alone, so I quickly said no I live with my family.

What should I have done? What would you have done? And I don't really want to hear that I'm paranoid and it was probably nothing, I don't want to treat this like nothing, I don't want to be in this situation again and not know what to do.

I guess you did the best possible... perhaps you could have lead him to some other building... but you'd need to get into it so he'd think you did have the keys... tough...
From now on... keep your eyes open for the guy around your place... try to avoid being alone out after dark in such a concealed area...
Might be just a standard nice guy who saw a woman walking alone at night, on a rough neighborhood, and wanted to lend a helping hand...
Might be just a casual creep that goes away... by tomorrow?

Its worth giving the police a heads up. What my sisters do is either call someone or pretend to when they are walking alone. That way they don't have to worry about talking to strangers seems they are already on the phone, plus it puts off anyone who is dodgy because you could immediately report them to whoever your talking to.

I had a bad experience once while I walked home from work. It was dark and I was around 18 years old. I still shake when I walk alone in dark areas. When I got mugged last month I froze as I kept thinking the same thing was going to happen again. PTSD for life! Well, hope not.

I don't mean to scare you, but it worries me that someone out there goes through it. Be careful. Carry pepper spray.

Its weird as a guy I get a weird opposite. If I'm walking alone on a dark night. I'm worried that I'm scaring people. It leads to a really weird paranoid thought process. I've even ended up taking longer routes home so that I don't look like I'm following people that I'm not following..
