An Untitled Serious Adventure Drama
#11
RE: An Untitled Serious Adventure Drama
That was the most execrable piece of tripe I've read since someone turned an orangutan loose on a word processor and called the result 'Left Behind' [nod to the Hitch].

Quote:In comedy nobody suffers except the bad guys if there are any.

Wrong, wronger, wrongest. Suffering is the ESSENCE of comedy. Think of a funny scene you've read in a book, or saw in a play or a film. There is ALWAYS suffering - that's what gets the biggest laugh. We laugh because it isn't happening to us. Mel Brooks said it best: 'Tragedy is when I stub my toe. Comedy is when YOU fall down an open manhole and die.'

And you're as wonky about tragedy. The essence of dramatic tragedy is undeserved suffering. Oedipus. Juliet. Willy Loman. Horrors visited on those who don't deserve them. Granted that several other of the dramatis personae may suffer, they don't do so in the same degree as the object of the tragedy, or their suffering takes the form of sympathy for the main character.

My advice to you it to take what you've written, fold it until it is nothing but corners, and shove it in your oubliette.

It was a poor attempt of humor, too bad H, go back to the drawing board.

Dear “pineapplebunnybounce” (if that truly is your name) (post 9)—

You introduce a couple of worthwhile points.

You notice that I “genuinely don't know what atheists are” and that I don’t know “what the position is.” That may be true. I left atheism behind decades ago. In those days there was no internet, so I didn’t have the peer pressure you have today. I had to go it alone, and the resources were far too paltry to keep me from thinking for myself.

So all I know of present-day atheist culture is what present-day atheists present to the world. And of course as an Orthodox Christian I'm painfully aware of the many new martyrs that militant atheism has given the Church. I'm sure this knowledge is, if possible, just as painful to a caring individual like yourself as it is to me.

On the other hand you also acknowledge that I'm “not recreating a mistaken image of atheism.” I appreciate that.

You then observe that “atheists care about a lot of things.” That’s a very good point, and I'm glad you mentioned it. I was dubious myself about the line “Nothing Matters.”
I think you're the only person who had anything at all to say about the actual content.

That in itself deserves appreciation!

Thx.

“missluckie26” (post 10) finds the piece “offensively ignorant,” “stereotypical,” and “poorly written,” but declines to say why. (“Poorly written,” certainly a controversial, claim is irrelevant for our purposes here.)

I can’t guarantee that everyone here has a well-functioning intellect. Part of my contention is that atheism tends to impair the normal functioning of the human soul.

Nevertheless I'm sure that we all want to know your reasons for making these remarks.

In post 13 “pineapplebunnybounce” has changed her mind. She now believes that I'm here just “to throw [my] ignorant ideas around.” Now, in post #9 she (or he) had something relevant to say. That’s the stuff we want to hear about. If my ideas are “ignorant” we’ll be better informed if you'll tell us why they seem so to you. The claim alone doesn’t tell us anything.

I'm not the one who can explain your thinking to us. You have to do it.

+

And “finally”—rather I should say “finely:” Finely a post (post 14) from an actual writer!—the Last of all possible Poets! She (or he) notes that my humble bit of theatre (unless it's a film; or a radio play—a podcast or something) was but a “poor attempt of [or “at”] humor.”

“Last Poet’s” is a post we should all take seriously insofar as this is posted in the Department of Humour. But “Last Poet” says nothing about the content. The content is where all the content is. That’s what we want to hear about.

“Pineapplebunnybounce” is the only one who had the wit to make any kind of comment on the actual content.
We have to do better than this. So far the complaints have all been very abstract and general. Not one person has said anything specific. Without specificity we're just spinning our wheels.

Now this is a humour forum. But we're about to talk serious bidniss. Should we do it here or in the Art Department? I vote Art Department. Does that present a problem?

I'd be happy to give you a rundown of every specific bit of content that I found offensive, ignorant, stereotypically offensive, and stereotypically ignorant, but right now I'm doing my nails. Big Grin
later.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

Oh yes. Because it's so inconceivable that no one would prefer picking apart your tedious post to painting their nails. Or really, doing anything else.
