German election results.

German election results.
Conservatives got 42%
Social democrats 26%
The Left has 8.5%
The Greens have 8%
Afd (a new libertarian anti EU party) have 4.9%
The liberterians have 4.7%

One needs at least 5% to get a seat in parlament, which means that the two liberterian parties might not make it inside and that due to the founding of the new party Afd the liberterian vote was probably splitt up between the two.
The social democrats could have achieved more and are definatly the big losers of this election. Actualy every single party except for the conservatives have lost this election since all of them could have achieved more.

One needs 300 seats in parlament to govern, currently the conservatives have 297 seats, which means that Merkel will remain chancelor and that the conservatives will be the main coalition partner in the next goverment.
It is not very likely that the liberterians will gain 3 seats, let alone that they will enter parlament. So the most likely coalitions are a conservative - social democratic or conservative - green coalition.

I am hoping for a conservative - green coalition.

Yeah - over here the conservatives are always allied with the Greens.

Well, I kinda like the conservatives, they are at least not supporting terrorists within our lands. The greens openly do so.

Merkel's success is that she has not embarrassed the country.

Turns out you can be quite conservative as long as you don't act like an idiot.

Looks like we are going to see more austerity.

Not necesserely.

If there is a conservative - green coalition, there will be pressure from the greens to end those messures or at least smothe them out to not be continued in a way which will not be the ruin southern Europe.
If there is a conservative - social democratic coalition, Steinbrück who would have supported austerity will not take part in such a goverment, the rest of the social democrats, especialy those arround the head of the party Sigmar Gabriel who have deep ties to the French socialist party, will oppose strickt austerity messures.

Conservative = stupid, is a purely American and Catholic European problem.

I am actualy pritty happy with Merkel. She reformed the conservative party from bein a party of old men as patriachs to a modern party of equality. Homosexual conservative representatives in parlament, a woman friendly climate within the party, the image of bein modern, non opposition to social equality and the detachment from the rusty age old countryside base and it`s horrible social conservative set of values.
Even if you dont like her financial foreign and domestic policies, in the future people will give her credit for bringing Germanies conservatives into the 21st century.

Sadly, TGAC, American conservatives get confused by the European usage of those terms. Then again, American conservatives get badly confused at 4-way stop signs, too.
