I've seen a few rants from ultra-conservatives about how the Republican party isn't conservative enough. I would love nothing more than to see the Tea Party split off to become its own party, splitting the GOP down the middle. Then both parties would be rendered more or less impotent and conservatism irrelevant in modern politics.

I love how every time the Republicans go down in flames (the Bush II years, McCain's/Romney's ass-kickings), the immediate cry is, "Oh, forget about it; that's the past," even as they ritually intone Saint Reagan every chance they get. <SNIP>

Since CC was responding to me, I feel compelled to point something out: this is one person who does not invoke Reagan at all. As I said, the past is the past, and while we can learn from the past, I don't want to relive it. I couldn't give two fucks about Reagan because I was 8 years old when he left office. All I care about is what happens today and tomorrow.

Btw, I didn't vote for Mitt or Obama, I marked the 'X' for Gary Johnson.

But, yeah. Democrats have a lot of room to improve. Republicans, on the other hand, are running out of shovels on their quest to find out just what rock bottom actually is. One effect I hope that this shutdown has is that the people who voted for these insane assholes are hurt the most by the effects of the shutdown (and the default, if the GOP thugs make that happen, too), not out of revenge, but perhaps so that a few of them realize that they are voting for political terrorists, and stop doing so. I don't care if they vote for Democrats or a rare rational Republican or even Santa Claus if that's what they want, but the Tea Party is a festering boil in serious need of lancing and nothing short of Tea Party voters suffering serious hurt because of their representatives' disregard for rational political discourse is going to make them stop casting votes which hurt themselves and everybody else.

A friend once told me that the wealthy elite didn't want to just "roll back" the New Deal, they wanted to roll back the entire 20th Century. His point was that all the social gains of the 20th Century were granted to us in order to combat global communism, and that with the collapse of communism the wealthy elite are going it take it all back.
I didn't fully appreciate his sentiments until recently.

To some in the Republican party rolling back the 20th century is not enough, they want to roll back the Enlightenment as well.

Fair enough. When one paints with too broad a brush, one will always find exceptions. I wish there were more young conservatives/libertarians who also didn't give two fucks about Reagan, but the ones I tend to meet still invoke his name (something like a religious meme passed from parent to child). And my point is, he's the only one from the GOP's past forty years they care to mention. Every other failed administration, every dismal candidate, every fuck up, every scandal is efficiently fed through the party's amnesia hopper until all that's left is the delusion that it's still 1984 and morning in America -- or should be again.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Having failed to persuade their traditional Republican allies in Congress to avert a government shutdown, business leaders fear bigger problems ahead, and they're taking sides with a Democratic president whose health care and regulatory agenda they have vigorously opposed.

President Barack Obama is embracing the business outreach, eager to employ groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Wall Street CEOs to portray House Republicans as out of touch even with their long-established corporate and financial patrons.

Yet, the partial closing of the government and the looming confrontation over the nation's borrowing limit highlight the remarkable drop in the business community's influence among House Republicans, who increasingly respond more to tea party conservatives than to the Chamber of Commerce.

On Wednesday, Obama was hosting chief executives from the nation's 19 biggest financial firms. Moreover, the Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to Congress signed by about 250 business groups urging no shutdown and warning against a debt ceiling crisis that they say could lead to an economically disastrous default.
