I've seen a few rants from ultra-conservatives about how the Republican party isn't conservative enough. I would love nothing more than to see the Tea Party split off to become its own party, splitting the GOP down the middle. Then both parties would be rendered more or less impotent and conservatism irrelevant in modern politics.

Btw, I didn't vote for Mitt or Obama, I marked the 'X' for Gary Johnson.

But, yeah. Democrats have a lot of room to improve. Republicans, on the other hand, are running out of shovels on their quest to find out just what rock bottom actually is. One effect I hope that this shutdown has is that the people who voted for these insane assholes are hurt the most by the effects of the shutdown (and the default, if the GOP thugs make that happen, too), not out of revenge, but perhaps so that a few of them realize that they are voting for political terrorists, and stop doing so. I don't care if they vote for Democrats or a rare rational Republican or even Santa Claus if that's what they want, but the Tea Party is a festering boil in serious need of lancing and nothing short of Tea Party voters suffering serious hurt because of their representatives' disregard for rational political discourse is going to make them stop casting votes which hurt themselves and everybody else.

Fair enough. When one paints with too broad a brush, one will always find exceptions. I wish there were more young conservatives/libertarians who also didn't give two fucks about Reagan, but the ones I tend to meet still invoke his name (something like a religious meme passed from parent to child). And my point is, he's the only one from the GOP's past forty years they care to mention. Every other failed administration, every dismal candidate, every fuck up, every scandal is efficiently fed through the party's amnesia hopper until all that's left is the delusion that it's still 1984 and morning in America -- or should be again.
