The slow down is due to the file system getting clogged up with files. Makes it slower to find certain files. That's why people should defragment their hard drives every month or so. Mac is slightly better than Windows on having hard drives fragmented, but Linux is better than both of them, due to the way the Ext and Reiser systems work.

Even with regular defrags your system will slow down over time. It's a fact of life.

You install shit, you update your o/s: the registry grows/ the computer stores settings to enable these programs to run.
