Hi,

My name's Steve and I'm an atheist (it's a bit like AA this...)

I'm a qualified Religious Studies teacher, and I've come here from a religion forum, as I find the subject fascinating.

My reason for coming here is fairly simple, but I'll have a look around and contribute here too as and when I can.

Basically I'm engaged in an argument with someone about whether most atheists are homosexual. I think it's a load of rubbish, but he's being insistent. His first post was a link to that 99% of atheists are homosexual hoax on youtube.

Can anyone guide me towards some statistics to shoot this guy down? I have been googling it too, I'm not just being lazy. In addition, the three (four) atheists on that forum are all straight. He said I'd need to do a poll on an atheist forum to get a more accurate answer, so here I am.

With permission I might post that poll, but I'll see how people respond here first, once I've looked around and got to know people a bit better.

24% of atheists polled were bisexual. I heard that Alfred Kinsey reckoned 50% of us are bisexual in some way, and that the other 50% were "strictly" one way or the other (i.e. totally hetero or homosexual).

You might want to point out that there are many Christian homosexuals, including several high ranking pastors (Ted Haggard recently had an interview where he practically admitted to being somewhat bisexual).

The interesting thing... would be to find out the number of religious people who are bisexual, and compare the data. 24% seems extraordinary, but I don't understand people enough to be certain of its inaccuracy (considering the general population's ration, which is to me unknown).

Maybe there's a correlation between the religiously inclined/ anti religious (ie they're the same thing). To not give a fuck puts you at the extreme ends of testosterone/ estrogen scale. Neanderthal tendencies seek out the middle ground.

No, seriously, that poll was interesting and I'll use that as 50 people is a reasonable spread from an online community.

24% isn't that surprising. Other stats I found reckoned that between 2% and 20% of the world population are homosexual, or at least bi, so 24% being bi is about right. I'd assume more people who were bi would be interested in even answering a poll like that, so that looks about right to me.
