England to drop swearing on bible in court.

Quote:Queries have been raised over whether the Bible is a necessity when asking people to being honest in court.

Magistrates are to debate whether to do away with the swearing of oaths on the Bible and other holy books in courts in England and Wales.

The move would see the end of the familiar sentence: "I swear by Almighty God, to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."

Instead there would be a statement in which people would promise "very sincerely" to tell the truth.

To drop and querying aren't the same thing. Though they may be starting to appreciate that not everyone in the UK is Christian.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.

In fact just over 59% of people in the Uk self identify as christian.
A huge drop since 2001 when it was 71%

12% in 10 years is a massive change.

I should point out that the Bible is completely optional already. Secular oaths exist in the system for anyone who wishes to use them.

I was a witness in a case a few years back as I ran their IT dept (Linky) and was given the option back then, so nothing new.

The problem with "an option" is that if someone declines to swear on a Babble, someone on the jury could then be prejudiced against that person for doing so. Do away with it altogether! Why should anyone be taking an oath in a secular courtroom while swearing on a religious text?

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
