This one was part of a church for years, but outgrew it and needed more space.

Which magically makes it still a church?

Actually I'm unaware of any atheist charities except for this one, and they manage to round up nine or ten people once a month, if that.

Googling 'atheist charities would cure that in a moment. There's never been an age when lack of awareness of something was more the result of the blinders you choose to wear than now.

They're relevant to being welcome as a volunteer at this charity, which is the simple truth.

The last bullet, however, does indicate that atheists aren't welcome to volunteer and proselytize (so to speak).

I wonder if you realized that you just admitted that the reason that soup kitchen exists is to proselytize to people? So much for doing good just because it's the right thing to do...

STILL thinking out loud here... I was not there, and the media is nearly always biased to the point that information is usually incomplete at best, and tainted at worst. I'm playing the scene in my head and it looks like this:
An overzealous atheist group sincerely wants to help within their community, and also sees this as an opportunity to make a political/belief statement in favor of their position. At the same time, an overzealous soup kitchen manager sincerely wants to help within their community, and sees this as an opportunity to make a political/belief statement in favor of their position. The dividing line in this particular scenario, is that the atheists entered into a camp where opposing/differing beliefs were already in place with an intent to help, AND make a statement. To me (again, I was not there) this sounds a little like the atheist group was making waves by entering an established camp carrying opposing banners. I'm not sure what the atheist group expected, but it sounds like their intent was thwarted by a discerning zealot. I'm not choosing sides here, but it is best if we 'free thinkers' don't limit our thinking, rendering it 'bound' rather than free.

No, just talking. It doesn't matter if it's a church or charity.

OK, I guess you're out of intelligible arguments.

Wouldn't bother me if I had, but you're incorrect - proselytizing is not the only way to bring glory to god. Where in the world did you get that idea?

Good news, everyone! The Upstate Atheists handed out about 300 packages (toothpaste, socks, that kknd of stuff) worth about $15 each; and another Christian soup kitchen in the area is happy to have their help. Greer soup kitchen, I think.

Why do you insist upon putting words in my mouth?

That was the plainest conclusion from what you wrote, but feel free to clarify.

Off topic, but any way we can get more people from your church to join our forum? I'd be very interested in their perspectives, and you wouldn't have to field all comments from atheists by yourself.
