The farthest I made it in Sonic 2 was the oil rig. Made it to the last boss in Sonic 3 and Knuckles (from the gamecube collection).
Sonic the Hedgehog: Pretty good, but I never made it very far.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Better, addition of spin dash helps.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Better than 2, but maybe I only say this because you could save.
Sonic 3D Blast: Do not want!
Sonic and Knuckles: About as good as Sonic 3.
Sonic CD: I actually beat this one! It seemed easier than the others...but the time-travel gimmick was kinda cool. I liked it.
Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut: Big's levels were a joke, Knuckles's weren't much better. Don't remember Tails's or Amy's (probably because they were forgettable) Sonic's and Gamma's were sort of okay (I guess). Chao garden was the best part. The cutscenes were hilariously bad (see below, especially their faces, like at 9:00)
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle: Chao garden was still the best part. Still do not want Knuckles's levels. Sonic levels were not too bad, but classic is still much better.
Sonic Rush: Kinda average, I guess.
Sonic Unleashed: Normal levels were pretty good for pure speed, but werehog was just...bad. Pointless dialogue is pointless.
Sonic and the Black Knight: Mediocre.
Newer Sonic games seem to be degenerating.

Ah, I loved SADX, great atmospheres, true Sonic racing, interesting character development for Chaos and Gamma, and totally with you on chao garden. The music, the interactions, the growth... so much love there.
To think a great game like this 1 was released 1998.
The next game I played from Sonic was Sonic Heroes. Forgettable story, fun gameplay, and still great atmosphere and music. The game was never well-founded in story, but it was certainly playable otherwise.
Sonic Unleashed was mentioned. Someone bought me this game for christmas. I played it, did not really enjoy the story, but Sonic at this point is not known for making sense really, just being extremely playable. Well, I loved playing as Sonic the Hedgehog, not so much Sonic the Werehog. Just the idea of a noodly armed shit defiles Sonic. Smashing just to progress through the game changed the genre quite a bit. And the other thing was the extensive use of puzzles. I can admire some puzzle games, but I just did not enjoy the slow-paced adventuring in a Sonic game. They failed me there. I loved racing as the hedgehog, like through the oriental level and battling the dragon, but otherwise I was disgusted with the game and quit after the treetop level.

To think a great game like this 1 was released 1998. The development of Gamma was good I have to admit. It helps that he had no facial expressions to botch. I probably spent more time in the chao garden from Adventure 2 Battle than I did in the rest of the game put together.

I think Sonic works well as a platformer, and as a speed oriented game, though each might appeal to differing tastes. The Sonic Adventure/2 type of mix wasn't quite as good as either classic or pure speed, but it wasn't too bad. They just had to throw in the Knuckles's emerald finding levels...because nothing screams fun more than an unengaging scavenger hunt.
The Black Knight levels weren't horrid, but weren't very sonic-like. The werehog levels were only topped in awfulness by Big's fishing levels, IMO. I've played a little of Colors and Shadow the Hedgehog, but I don't think I could register an accurate judgment about them now.

Some people enjoy the direction of the 3D sonic games. They certainly aren't 'as bad as ET'... they're 'average games' with a different take on Sonic the Hedgehog.
Doesn't happen to be the 'gotta go fast' selling point of the first few sonic games.
...
The casual market certainly is more appreciative of the direction change, even if the critical hardcore market shuns it as a shadow of its predecessors.

Very enjoyable gameplay. Easy, but it was a pretty fun game, as I remember it. Certainly not very replayable, but it was charming.

It's been so long since I've played a Sonic Game.
I'm partial to the classics, but some of the newer ones haven't been complete bombs for me. I need to get Sonic 3 for the genesis again, I miss that game.

I like the old ones more, most of the new ones are just terrible (Sonic 06 would be a perfect example) but one exception was Sonic Generations. And if this one counts too then it would be Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
