I am thankful for better living through chemistry.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Friends, family, a good education and a good career.

Maybe the thankfulness is just kind of synonymous to being 'happy' for something, or maybe 'proud' of something (minus God).
Yeah, I find it funny to say, "I'm thankful for..." when you are atheist. In any case, instead of thankful for a wife, for example, I would understand thankful to the wife for being the wife. Perhaps? Just a thought.
I'm thankful for my Gwynnies for being my Gwynnies. The clarification is trivial.
But I do agree that when the object is not a person, further clarification is needed. And it would seem often that such would reveal a thankfulness for self.

The thread asks what am I thankful for, and not toward.
I am thankful for/toward, my wife who...
loves me unconditionally...
reminds me that I'm only human...
shares her heart with me...
blah, blah, blah...
I answered the question as asked.
I am thankful to my wife for putting up with me, loving me, being who she is, on and on and on and on... Is that semantically sufficient?

I don't see an important difference between being thankful and feeling glad. When my other pup died this year, what I felt most strongly was how glad I was to have known him and glad that we had the relationship that we did.
"I feel fortunate that ..."
"I feel lucky that ... "
"I feel thankful that ..."
"I feel glad that ..."
If there's an important difference here it is getting away from me.

That's a good question.
Who came up with Breasts? I am really thankful for those.

"I find it funny"
"Just a thought."
I never talked about an "important difference". An important difference rests in the following:
Putting your ass on a horse and putting a horse in your ass.
Having sex on the beach and having sex on a bitch.
Tapping a stick on my back and tapping a stick in my back.
Food for thought and thought of food.
This being important or important being... Oh wait. That doesn't make sense.
Sheesh. Pull my hair and call me Satan, why don't you.
No, really. Do it!
