Why are atheists disrespectful?
|
Just a point for consideration ....
No one has an automatic entitlement to be respected ... It is my experience that respect has to be earned . Perhaps Christians are not that respectable? (and just as an aside .... why is your question Xitian-centric ... can those of other faiths ,or indeed none ,deserve respect? are you not concerned ,for example , with a lack of respect for Hindus or Mohamedans?)
Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.
That's a good point...

I'm one of those atheists who tends not to lash out at people for their religious views, unless they're using them as a weapon or a tool for political advantage. Basically, the way I treat people depends on their behaviour and how they treat me. If someone shows they want an intelligent discussion, they earn more of my respect than someone who comes along acting like a spoiled, whiny tit.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

The OP asks..." Why are atheists disrespectful?"
Ahhh, I have a better question for you poe... Why are human beings disrespectful? (hint) One answer covers both questions.
At the risk of banging my own drum, I find it a bit disingeuous of religionists to single out atheists for disrespect. Yes, some atheists are disrespectful of the viewpoints of believers (e.g., Richard Dawkins, Yours Truly).
As a movement or institutionally, atheism has never advocated punishing or killing people for their beliefs. Atheists don't ostracize believers from the community. Atheists haven't tortured anyone into giving up their beliefs. Atheists don't throw petrol bombs at religonists. Atheists don't establish rules to keep believers from holding public office. It isn't atheists who are bombing churches and abortion clinics. It isn't atheists who are killing Muslims in Burma, or killing Christians in Egypt or killing Jews in France. Yes, some of the more militant atheists openly sneer are the beliefs of believers. Yes, there is disrespect. But you'd have to walk a long, LONG road to find among atheists the kind of ossified disrespect you find among the faithful. Boru

I respect people that deserve it. Respect is earned.
People's silly beliefs, however, do not deserve respect. When I am debating a theist, I try my best to show them respect. However, when it comes to their beliefs, I won't hold back. The problem is, many Christians (and Muslims) seem to take poking fun at their beliefs as an attack on their person. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
