Don't give me such power and choice! It's too much, it's too much! Aaaargh!
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Some fascinating thoughts here. Thanks guys.
@ Ksa, that may well be true but I'm thinking more of the temporal effects of the sociological edifice rather than the level of silliness or irrationality. The church of the flying spaghetti monster is unlikely to get a vote, not because it's less irrational but rather that it's followers do less damage in the noodly ones name (blessed be it's most magnificent meatballs).

Absolutely not, you can obliterate religion with science and reason, these only make more atheists not fewer.
Religion is merely a popular con game on the gullible, it is not needed, free or otherwise. You don't need to legalize imaginary gods to create a good society. You can't blaspheme against reality.
But it won't eradicate religion, no matter how educated humans become. Some of the most intelligent of scientists still manage to believe in a deity. Just look at the head of the HUman Genome Project.

Sure it will, eventually. Once atheism becomes the norm and not the exception, it will have a snowballing effect as most religion is spread by social pressure. While there is a slim minority of christians in upper science now, they are simply refusing to apply their reasoning abilities due to their environmental social pressures. Just like an unfavorable evolutionary trait, it will become extinct because science does not create gods, only ignorance creates gods.

None. If I would obliterate a religion then another one would be invented instead. And because another religion would have less of slavery and other bullshit which would make it harder to find bad things about it I'd rather have very evil religion being popular instead. Easier to debunk.

That happens anyway. When religions pass into mythology, new religions are invented. All religions eventually pass into mythology, except for the stubborn Judeo-Christian denominations that want to cling to their ignorance by falsely asserting that their beliefs are grounded in reality.
If everyone understood that religion is mere mythology, there would be no need to eradicate religion from the planet. As it is, people think that their silly religious beliefs entitle them to harm other people in the name of their mythological deity.

That was my first thought. Take out Judaism, and Christianity and Islam would go too since they're offshoots of the first one.
