I want to like this pope, but the cynic in me says to keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
And I realize that such an entrenched institution can only take gradual changes lest the entire organization crumble, but a lot of these changes seem to be cosmetic at best.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Most religion IS cosmetic. It's something to do once a week, or as a ritual at mealtimes, or as a persona one uses to protect themselves (whether it be from society, responsibility, or their own self-destruction and/or hatred).
But then, there remains the noncosmetic side of religion.

I agree.
I do like this pope. But call me cynical, I'm still expecting the second shoe to drop.
D'oh. Faith No More beat me to it.

Faux News has already been attacking him, so it kinda puts them in a bind, doesn't it? Either reject the message from Faux News or reject the pope.
Personally, I hope he pushes the GOP back into reasonableness, at least as far as economic policy goes.

Honestly, with the teabaggers basically running the GOP these days, I doubt that will ever happen. Pushing the party away from the extreme right fringe is liberalism to these people, and any moderate Repubs are simply RINO's. I mean, fuck, they refuse to change their policies even though they know that they can't win on the straight, rich, white guy vote.

Channels Min: that is because he prefers little boys just as all priests do.
Min also decided to tone down the language a bit.
Ah, fuck that.

Aw, c'mon. I'm a teddy bear of an American. I'll grant that some of us are scary, and some are stupid (maybe most), but I at least am all right.
