I never finished SMRPG: Legend of the 7 Stars when I first played it. Got back into it about a month ago. GREAT game all around: interesting art style in an isometric-perspective game and quality sprites, decent story, great music and gameplay, and surprisingly funny, if simple, humor. If you've played newer Mario RPGs and liked them, you have this game to thank for it, as the later games drew their main features (gameplay mechanics) and style (the type of humor and plot) from this game. Do recommend.
Oh, and there's a part where you can find what in the Japanese version of the game is implied to be Princess Peach's dildo, and she gets pissed if she's already joined your party. xD

Why do the Japanese always get the good stuff? I've read their version of FFIV has Cecil finding some porn mags that he really liked.
Oh, I know this isn't FF, but I didn't want to start a new thread concerning jrpgs...Breath of Fire II is a pretty awesome game. It sucked me in when I was in 7th grade, but mainly for the story. I thought it was a pretty bold an awesome move that the enemy was working its evil through holy churches and his followers thought they were doing God's work. The dialogue is a little terrible but the story, for me, is brilliant. I bet it got a lot of hate back then, because of the anti-religious stuff. It seems like a forgotten gem, because I rarely hear anyone mention it.

What's worse is that one of the main characters had a more detailed backstory to him in the Japanese than in the American.
Cecil was also a bit more evil in the Japanese version.

Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite game ever made. VI and VII are usually considered as the best of the series, but if you aren't into those you could try IV, VIII, and IX. You may enjoy the linear style of FF that X, XII and XII offers if the others aren't your style. Hell, you may not be be a fan of that style of gaming though. Not everyone is. I can't stand shooters, while others won't play anything but shooters. Different strokes and all that.
IGN ran top 100 rpgs last year and FF6, Chronological Trigger and FF IV all made the top 10 with FF6 and Chronological Trigger taking first and second place. I was very pleased to say the list. The only other FF games that made the list were 1, 7, 9, 10 and 8. Poor XII was left out altogether. .. Love XII too, I do.

FFVIII was the one that made me quit the series when I was younger. Started playing FFIX a few months ago, it's much improved IMHO.

I liked 12 the best, was debating whether to get 13 and 13-2 as I often see them on sale, but I'm not sure whether it'll be worth it. I like final fantasy games in general but they're a bit too 'classic rpg' in the sense they are all about numbers and 'special attacks'. As opposed to action and dialogue based rpg's that I prefer like what Bioware produces.

I disliked 13, but actually don't mind 13-2 so much. I've nearly completed it 100% and am only now just starting to get fatigued by it.
Only downside (for me) is that story is so incredibly complex and disjointed. I realise that the entire FF13 series is part of a larger mythology that SE have tried to create but I don't think it works, at least in my opinion. Still undecided whether I will get FF13 3 (Lightning's return). Probably not.

I found XIII and its trilogy terrible, but some people really get into it. It is very linear and has no open world or actual levels. They tried a few new things that just didn't work for me, and I wouldn't usually care but when it's taking them half a decade to push out a new game then it gets pretty unsettling. FF XII was controversial but I liked it a lot, even if Vann and Penello served no real purpose to the storyline. FF XII came out in 2006 and that's a long time to wait for a decent game for those who hated XIII, and the fan base seems to be crumbling due to impatience and frustration with Square's priorities.
