Ok, so I was, in the shower, trying to examine exactly how much of Christianity I still believe in. It didn't take me very long. I'm now thinking it's dishonest to continue to describe myself as such.

I still plan to follow the same doctrines, but I can't honestly claim to believe that they are based on reality any more. Esquilax pushed me over the edge the bastard.

However I'm clearly not yet an atheist as I still like Christianity a lot! I just can't believe the basis of it.

Is there a name for that?

Cultural christian, I think.

I think I had a short exchange with you that I may have lost track of, where you said you like some of the teachings in xtianity and that was why you identify as a xtian? Before I lost track of it I was going to point out that we all adopt teachings we like from different sources, but we don't exactly need to identify ourselves as members of a certain group. In other words, it doesn't have to be a package deal. So you really could call yourself whatever you like, agnostic, atheist, etc. None of it means you stop appreciating xtianity but rather that you no longer believe jesus came from a virgin birth and died on the cross etc. etc.

For sure, whatever the truth of the universe is, we cannot know what it is.

So I am wary of those who have claimed to have found it.

But for me? more importantly than being an atheist, I am a humanist and think that humanities problems can only be solved by humans working together to improve everyones lot in life.

Not by praying to some unproven deity.

I'd suggest going back to the basics and starting from there. Do you believe in one or more Gods?

If yes - do you think they are hands on or hands off (theist or deist)?

If you believe in a theist God then from there on in its just a case of choosing your flavour.
If you're not sure you are now an agnostic.
If you simply don't believe then you are, by definition an Atheist and welcome on board.

Yeah basically this. None of the good values held by christians are unique to christianity. Therefore, you can espouse the best of christianity without having to be a christian at all, because mose sane and caring humanists already combine the best of religious moral code with the non-religious moral code. Once you can discard the bad 'ethics' and the theological junk that comes with religion, you can work towards really improving the world.

Whether they be 'correct', though.. that's hard to know.

Not sure why you would want to follow the same doctrines, while claiming you don't believe in them anymore.

That, to me, sounds like a plain contradiction.

RE: Other options
But you are not Christian by thought and belief; you are simply attaching the label "Christian" to yourself while not having faith in the basis of it. You just like the cultural parts, not the spiritual.

So, an "agnostic" or an "atheist" is more accurate for you, in my opinion.

^ If not, then at most a "Christian atheist."
