Some of those of us in the South got "the switch". You got the hand or belt? Bwahahahahah! No comparison, I promise you!

RE: Children and punishments
I have had experience with children, and my nieces don't really get spanked. They get sent to their room or something. sending them to a corner might be a good idea, but then they'd still be crying. I'm not keen on the old "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about" line.

It really depends on what's effective with the kid. I've had nightmares from my dad threatening to beat me, but I have hit my nieces from time to time. Usually I'm just supposed to send them to their parents, though they can be uncooperative and I'm not supposed to drag them.

Seriously, if I ever got enough money and wanted to raise a kid, I'd adopt someone that's already been taught right. little kids are only fun when you can leave them if they get annoying.

Wait, hitting your own kids is bad enough, but hitting someone else's kids? You might wanna not do that.

I just remembered a couple of stories I heard about my uncle, actually. One time when I was a baby he kicked my pushchair, then he ran downstairs when he saw the look on her face. So she chased him down the stairs and beat the shit out of him. Hahaha.
Second story, one time he hit one of my cousins, so my aunt knocked him out with a frying pan. He never did it again. Physical discipline works on grown men, too! Tongue

There's no crying alowed in the corner. Additional time as an alternative has been 100% effective. Even though he has a very shaky understanding of time at 4, he knows what "longer" means, and his crocodile tears are never worth that trade. I nipped that in the bud a couple years ago.

My sister has told the kids that they can't come out until they stop crying, but they'll still be crying ten minutes later.

Yeah they've gotten mad at me for punishing the kids myself. partly because I'm not a very mature adult, and I've been told that unless I "act my age", I can't discipline the kids. Not that they want me spanking them anyway.

My sister has never come at me with a weapon. I don't think that would end well for her. She slapped me once for whacking her daughter on the butt, but if she raised something heavy I wouldn't just take it.

You know one of the most annoying things is that whole "demand an apology, despite that I'm obviously not sorry, but I need to pretend anyway". I don't like lying, especially if it's to make someone I'm mad at feel better.

Unfortunately I don't have one of those. We're on a tight budget.

I used to get hit when I was younger, but when I got too big they just started grounding me. Me and my dad would still scuff it out every once in a while though, but for the most part I really don't thinking hitting kids is that bad. Sometimes pain is a good way to teach, just like when it comes to a hot stove. We feel pain for a reason and it's to learn not to do whatever caused that pain, it's a good way to teach consequences.
