That's why I spend as much time as finances allow drunk. No, I was stone cold sober when I wrote the OP. I actually have had encounters with hookers, when I managed to get enough money and when I simply could not stand it one more second. The encounters weren't exactly what I'd call satisfying, comfortable or even pleasant. In fact they were entirely soulless and coldly mechanical, despite their being very nice ladies. I'd get more human connection with a rubber doll. I felt nothing. Still, if that's what my life is going to be then so be it. Everywhere I look there's at least one happy couple in front of my face, doing what Sam and I made others jealous by doing. Meanwhile I'm watching - or trying not to watch - from my shelf. "I'll no more on 't. It hath made me mad."
I've read all your comments, both supportive and otherwise, and while I truly didn't start this thread to garner sympathy I do appreciate it.
To those commenters who think I'm wallowing in self-pity, and at the risk of angering those who might think I'm making an unwarranted and unfair comparison, I want to say that it's more like this:

It occurs to me that you may still be fighting to maintain who you were with Sam and that isn't any longer possible. In some sense I think you really need to allow yourself to hit bottom - without the ultimatum. Empty out, accept what you find and go from there. Everyone who knows you here has confidence that will work out just fine, but you shouldn't. You just have to accept whatever you are now and start the rebuild from the bottom up. That's my two cent's worth for free. (It's a little pushy/presumptuous but, hey, you threatened someone I like.)

Man, Stimbo, it sounds like you need an introspective journey. Unfortunately I would not know what your journey should be (mine was running in the woods and cities for a couple days while psychotic, for example, and I dont know if that would be the right path for everyone  ) but everyone who has said you need a change is right. You have to face yourself alone first before finding someone else, at least this is what I think in your case. And you should know, I consider you to be a very legit person. I hope you find it in yourself to keep going.
