How can a Christian reject part of the Bible and still call themselves a Christian?

She believes that it is perfectly acceptable to be a homosexual because you should be able to love anyone you want.
I asked her how she could say that and call herself a Christian. She became iritated. I pointed out that her Bible clearly states that it is an abomination. She finally said " I don't care what it says" and ended the conversation. The stress caused by the cognitive dissonance was pretty high.
I find Christians do this a lot. They reject what they don't like in the Bible.

The condemnation, when put in Biblical and historical context, is easily explained away and not necessary. Besides, the Bible isn't a litigious document of judgement and brimstone, but a book of truth with a message of love, tolerance, and acceptance.

They accept that god exists and that he is the god they worship. They accept this without ever having verified it. I think that the ones that start to pick and choose what they accept from the Bible have taken a step towards chucking the whole mess, but some find it too difficult to let go. Still, it's better than the outrageous logical contortions and hilarious rationalizations that some of them cling to.

Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Here is the answer to your question:

This girl you spoke with and those like her are slightly less stupid than the other sheep.
That's right, as a rule of thumb, the more of the Bible you reject the less of a gullible twit you become.

Write that down.

Wait, what? I always thought you had read The Wholly Babble. Let me bring you up to speed and inform you that The Lord, as usual, is one step ahead of you.

Sex in The Hoary Bible

I mean, did you see the part where Jacob's wives are competing against each other? And then they have Jacob have sex with their maidservants? OK, ignore the fact that Jacob's wives are also his cousins and this is really hot stuff.

Then there's the adultery of David and Bathsheba. Can you get any closer to a soap opera?

Now, it's a bit harder to find in the NT but Jesus did have a mysterious young man in a loin cloth when he was arrested. The young man had to flee the scene naked.

I was about to say "Amen!" and then you had to go and write this drivel:

Quote:As with the case of killing homosexuals in the old testament, Jesus abolished the old testament law and formed a new covenant.
I'm sorry but can you quote me chapter and verse where Jesus abolished certain OT laws but still kept the prohibition against love between people with similar body parts? And how can you as a Christian, condemn love between people with similar body parts and not call for their execution? The Bible couldn't possibly be more clear on this subject!

Quote:Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them

Crystal clear! If two people with similar body parts do the nasty, this is an abomination to the Lord and you should kill them both!

Now you would suggest that Jesus comes along and abolishes these holy and righteous laws? Never mind how you've decided that an all-powerful, almighty, all-knowing god suddenly up and changes his mind about his own rules, let's see what the NT has to say on the subject:

Quote:Romans 1:26-32 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
...
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

So Paul says that both gays and their supporters are worthy of death for their crimes.

I trust that you'll pardon me if I consider Paul, not you, to be the authority on what the new covenant with Yahweh-Holy Spook-Jesus is supposed to be?

Dumb ass phony Christian!

Wait a minute.
Maybe this isn't about sex after all. Maybe it's that false witness thing.
Lying is bad. Don't lie with men the same way you lie with women. Looks pretty straightforward to me.
Besides lying with mankind would have been really difficult back in the day without global media. You could have lied with a couple of people max. The rest of them would have been saying something else and maybe some of them would have been telling the truth. You couldn't have gotten all mankind to lie the same way as you so you couldn't have lied with mankind.
Problem solved.
I like doing bible mental gymnastics. Makes me limber.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

You're right. If you are a christian and believe that the bible is God's inspired word, you can't pick and choose.

Hebrews 8:13 and Romans 7:6 are vesrses you're looking for. The bible doesn't condem love between people with similar body parts. It condems sexual acts between them.
Quote:Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Read my references.
He didn't change his mind about it being an abomination. He decided to deal with it in a different way in the new covenant.
Romans 1:26-32 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

So Paul says that both gays and their supporters are worthy of death for their crimes.

Anyone who refuses to follow God's calling will "die". In the bible death is often referred to as not receiving eternal life, which is what he speaks of here in both senses. In fact, we're all worthy of death because we're all sinners.

You're right. Read Romans 7:6 again.

Let me help you out.

Quote:Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb while Rachel remained barren. Leah became pregnant and had a son, and she named him Reuben. She said, 'Yahweh has seen my misery. Now my husband will love me.'

So slowly she raised her robe and dropped to her knees and prepared to worship his staff of life......
