Have to agree with Rahul on this one. Shit is complicated. I have to believe resentment about having their affairs dictated by other states probably motivated many Southerners as much or more so than the thought that slavery would become abolished. That doesn't mean there weren't plenty of influential Southerners who were plenty savvy about the importance of slavery to keeping their toast buttered. But how that gets sold to the poorer class who fights the war was probably much less realistic.

Not sure what your point is....probably because you rarely have one. If it is to say that the French had to endure multiple revolutions/civil wars/coups and government collapses in order to attain a stable government then you're correct.

The French revolution acheived nothing near a stable and fair government. They became worse tyrants than the royalty and aristocrats they beheaded. They were killing anyone just for mere suspicion. Although a dictator, Napoleon was probably the best leader France ever had.
