Republican opposition puts Paul Ryan budget in serious jeopardy

Conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus, stirred by the anti-Washington rhetoric dominating the presidential campaign, pulled the rug out from Ryan on Monday night when they voted to oppose the leadership's budget proposal. Without the votes of the roughly 40 members in that group, nothing can pass on the House floor without Democratic support, which Ryan won't get.

If House Republicans fail to approve a budget they won't be able to act on the dozen annual spending bills, and once again this fall congressional leaders will have to fashion a stopgap funding bill to avoid a government shutdown.

Because there is nothing quite as fucking stupid as a tea bagger.

WASHINGTON — With the United States now dominated by four major airlines, Senate Democrats on Wednesday waged an unsuccessful effort to let federal regulators decide whether airlines were charging unreasonable fees for checked bags, ticket changes and seat assignments.

But:

 Markey’s amendment to let the FAA decide what level of fees were reasonable failed on a tie party-line vote.

“I don’t think having the Department of Transportation decide what is reasonable or unreasonable is a correct route to go,” said committee chairman Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.

Ever since Arizona voters outlawed high-interest payday loans in 2008, the lending industry has been looking for ways around that ban.
This year, the debate is playing out in the form of "flex loans," short-term loans that would have a maximum 24-month term and a $2,500 cap. In addition, borrowers would be limited to one loan at a time, with their practices tracked by a database to ensure they don't pile up debt.
But it's the interest rate that's animated the debate: Although an unsecured loan is advertised with a 17 percent monthly rate, it works out to 204 percent on an annualized basis.

Backers of the quick-loan industry, many of whom offer payday loans in other states, hired Axiom, a lobbying and consulting firm with ties to Ducey, to shepherd the bill through the Legislature. Industry representatives have contributed to lawmakers' campaigns, rallied community members to speak for the bill and gathered petitions in support of flexible loans.

Today, after much anticipation, Senate Agriculture Committee chairman Pat Roberts's bill went up for vote. Though the House of Representatives had passed its own version of the bill, the Senate declined to follow suit and voted against it:

Actually the senate voted 49-48 for it but they need 11 more republicunt criminals to get it enacted.

They'll keep writing checks.

The act shouldn't be considered dead in the water, though, as it's not without support, and food and biotech companies are clearly invested in its success, having spent hundreds of millions of dollars combating mandatory labeling.
