I still don't get how some can apparently delute themselves that much. I mean, my grandparents weren't this hardcore as far as I know (I KNOW my mother's parents weren't)

You yourself seem to have a very hard time not believing it, it worked for your parents.the same way, and a few generations before that i presume. You see how powerful this replication mechanism of the religion meme is from your own example. There you have your explanation.
