depends on the degree, and the person.
I've worked nothing but shit jobs with no degree, it wasn't working, so I'm back at school at the age of 30 looking to get my bachelors. Most importantly, I went back because I wanted to learn science, secondly I want a better chance at life. Are there negatives to school? yes..
But lets face it, it's scenario based along with a bunch of other different factors. English majors, liberal art, and art majors also have it a lot more harder then the rest.

It's kind of depressing that almost every person in this thread has equated their life worth with their job. There is so much more to your life than just what you do for money. Don't value yourself based on a career choice. No matter whether you make 20k or 100k a year, is your life going to be all about what you do for 2 week of vacation? Wake up people. Life is more than High School-College-Debt-Job-Family-Divorice-Retirement-Death. If the bottom line of how much money you are going to make is the only factor you consider, I pity you.

I don't disagree, I never had a problem with money, what I do care about is what I do for that money whether rich or poor. My major selection in school has nothing to do with potential capital gain, but has everything to do with what I want to do with my life.

I've had this discussion with my boyfriend more times than I can count. He has two great passions: art and science. I can go for a walk in the park and ask him to identify the trees, grass, rocks and insects around us and he can usually do it quite well and give a few more details on all of them. Then he could go home and make a painting of all of them and it will look amazing.
As he's gone through college, he looked at an art degree and he certainly has the natural aptitude for art to do it, but when you look at the job market for artists, it isn't good. I have a couple of fb friends who have art degrees and they regularly complain about having to get a crappy, entry level job, even after they spent all that time and money on a degree. And art isn't the only field like that. Most liberal arts degrees will be like that. I've heard a lot of feminists complain about how their parents criticize them for getting a degree in women's studies, but the reality is, if daddy spends $50,000 getting you a women's studies degree, that degree won't open a lot of professional doors.
Now, if you look at the science careers, even those aren't a guarantee to a good job; again, Lee has an interest for entomology, but when we looked up the job prospects for that field, it didn't look so great. But overall, a degree in the hard sciences will be able to pay for itself a lot better than many other degrees. There's a future in science degrees. Nursing and medical fields are also good degrees to get into, especially with Obamacare coming in and increasing the demand for healthcare.
And if you REALLY want the degree to pay for itself, business degrees and banking and accounting, those are generally the way to go.

I thought I would add that in the age of technology which we currently live, it is much easier to obtain a better education online where anything can be found at one's fingertips. And, it is free. Sure, the better jobs in our society prefer that one has a degree in order to obtain the career, but a degree itself does not imply intelligence. Plenty of self-educated people are much smarter than those who attended college. I believe being smart is more important than a piece of paper saying I graduated from a certain college.

I agree. But obtaining a degree shows that you have the dedication and drive to carry through. Those qualities are what gets your foot in the door. It's stupid but I'm talking about the reality of the situation, not how it should be in fairytale land.

Seriously though, some endeavors reqire advanced education. I would pursue whatever your passion is. If it requires university, go; if it doesn't, don't. Find something you enjoy doing and become the best at it.
