Seriously, how is anyone dumb enough to be fat?

What I've learned so far disturbs me greatly. People are so, so dumb.

I know people who worry about their weight, but don't do anything to change their destructive/unhealthy lifestyles! It's like they never bothered learning nutrition and they don't want to learn it now.

This is what I've learned: people are extremely ignorant. In fact they're so unaware that they try "fad diets" with no concept as to why it would or wouldn't work. They say that they want to lose weight - but don't even bother to make the easy small changes to their eating habits that would guarantee it!!

Like true, I don't really understand how my car engine works and that's why I let a mechanic take care of it - but we're talking about our bodies, how do people not take proper care of their own bodies???

So seriously, how is it that people are so, so dumb??

LOL. As a fat person, lemme just say I'm not ignorant about healthy living. It's not about being dumb. It's about apathy. Don't mistake apathy for stupidity...that's a big mistake. Frankly, I can't see how you missed that, but okay.

I agree. In fact, I am mortified by the lies told by the diet industry by blood sucking leeches (these'd be the companies that simply want to profit the most rather than the ones that want to provide the best possible care to their patients). But they're not all bad, Weightwatchers is an example of a good product.

I beg to differ LP, I'm sharing what I've learned. I'm merely making some observations, not judging people. For instance, some people here feel that it's due to addictive behaviour, but I feel that it's more to do with habits than addiction.

(March 18, 2014 at 11:41 am)Kitanetos Wrote: Also, diet does play a role, though not for everyone. It is stated that one must always eat three square meals a day, but even while working out eating that much is not going to help shed the pounds. One must eat healthier, but also less than what is supposedly recommended by the so-called experts. One cannot eat more calories than one loses during workout, and eating three meals a day tends to add up to more calories than one loses during daily workouts. I have been eating one small meal a day while drinking lots of water while also trying to jog daily, and that is how I have been losing weight.
That's a really bad plan. You should eat 3 meals, but you don't have to. But it is really important.

Also, when you are overweight your metabolism increases so that in effect you need more calories to maintain your weight, and as you loose the weight it slows back down to normal, this is why you can eat 2500 calories a day and loose weight easily until you approach a healthy weight, when you'll need to cut down to 2200 or so a day (perhaps less).

Correct, I agree 100%!

However consider this: it takes longer to put weight on than to lose it.

Why do you even care? You're slim and trim, aren't you? So am I. Why do you give a rat's charbroiled arse if the bloke down the road is a great wobble-bottom? It isn't any of your business.

This is just one more aspect of religious (in your case, CofE) intolerance. People have a belief, or a habit, or a lifestyle that you don't like, and they're suddenly 'dumb'. And now you've managed to add body types to the list of things upon which you can heap your holier-than-thou sanctimony. What happen - you run out of things to condemn people for?

You clearly don't care about the (very real) health issues associated with obesity. If you did, you might live up to that 'love thy neighbor as thyself' line you're always cramming down everyone else's throat and actually get up off the Judean side of your arse and try to help someone. But oh, no! It's ever so much simpler to just call people 'ignorant' and do nothing. Well, mate, ignorance is curable. How often to you offer exercise and nutrition tips to people whose weight bothers you? You clearly know a lot about these topics: ever thought of volunteering as a weight-loss counselor, or even putting out a news letter? If not, why not? I suspect it may be because you actually enjoy pointing a metaphorical finger at fatties and thinking 'Neener, neener, I'm smarter and better than you!' Typical Christian.

I sincerely hope the next bucket of granola you wolf down gets lodged in your windpipe, and the Heimlich that saves you is administered by a 20 stone Muslim.

Well it doesn't need to be taught in schools, after all it's adults that need to know it and not children. My point though is that we learn through experience

A great reason to advocate for a more skeptical and scientifically literate society.
Hmm, no. Not everyone is interested in science, and the socialist ideal doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.
Quote:Some people can't be bothered to change their habits or address their addictions or psychological reasons why they turn to food.
Right, but what you've just listed is three different things and they're not equal. Habits, Addictions, Psychological. The psychological aspect will normally take care of itself by changing behaviour.
Quote:Both of my parents have had bariatric surgery. My dad has recently begun putting weight back on. His response wasn't to stop his late night snacking on unhealthy, salty foods and replace his sugary, high-calorie fruit juice with water, nor was it to be more active and burn off the calories he is able to consume, it was to go get his lap band filled so he can't eat as much.
There's a placebo effect that goes along with lap band surgery, along with the psychology that the surgery will fix the problem on its own. In fact I've seen countless medical doctors on TV even call it a "permanent solution", but it's certainly not permanent.

But just as your father has clearly re-stretched his stomach, you can also quite easily reduce the size of your stomach anytime without resorting to surgery. In fact just the hospitalization portion of the procedure would result in most obese people's stomach's shrinking while in hospital without any surgery taking place.

With that said it isn't a bad option, however I would certainly agree that people who would like the procedure should have to demonstrate 1-2 stone weight loss on their own first to show that they are committed to it before having the surgery (people who are morbidly obese physically can't have the surgery until they lose enough weight to allow for safe operation).

With all of this said however, I'll remind you that this thread is about putting the weight on in the first place more than weight loss, and what strikes me as fascinating is the fact that most people seem not to realize, and that is that it's harder and takes longer to gain weight than to lose weight!
Quote:In both my parents' cases, they don't want to make major life style changes, they don't want to have to give up the foods they love, they don't want to go to the gym every day and put the time and effort in, knowing that it's time and effort they'll have to devote for the rest of their lives to keep the weight off, they want to easy fix. They want results without the work.
Yep, sounds exactly like the overall problem. Most bulimics in fact do not lose weight for much the same reason: you can't expect positive results from negative behaviour.

If this thread is about putting on the weight, maybe you'd actually like to talk to someone who got fat instead of just calling them "dumb"? Or have you already made up your mind?

Firstly, yes I'm a healthy weight.

Secondly, it interests me, and it is absolutely my business since my tax dollars pay for people who chose to get Type 2 Diabetes, or cause other medical expenditure due to their weight. You forget, I am also a capitalist.
Quote:This is just one more aspect of religious (in your case, CofE) intolerance. People have a belief, or a habit, or a lifestyle that you don't like, and they're suddenly 'dumb'.
I didn't say that, don't put words into my mouth. They're dumb because they don't want to get overweight, but they're wilfully ignorant as to how it happens.
Quote:And now you've managed to add body types to the list of things upon which you can heap your holier-than-thou sanctimony.
It has nothing to do with body type!
Quote:You clearly don't care about the (very real) health issues associated with obesity.
Um, I clearly do. I have a family history of Type 2 Diabetes; Type 2 Diabetes is seen as wholly preventable (although I'd grant you that a small number of people have a medical condition that results in unwanted weight gain). Since I have a family history, even though I'm Caucasian I may as well be Indian or Pakistani - I cannot afford to be a single kilo overweight and not expect to be at risk of it.

It's the fat people who don't care about the very real health issues, and most of them don't believe it will happen to them.
Quote:You clearly know a lot about these topics: ever thought of volunteering as a weight-loss counselor, or even putting out a news letter?
Yes, and in fact I'm considering exactly how to go about it at the moment.

Yes I do, it speeds up when you put on more weight to cope with the increased mass. Do you understand how metabolism works?

RE: Seriously, how is anyone dumb enough to be fat?
I'd say we are bombarded with commercials for fast food all the time - and fast food is a MAJOR contributor to obesity in our societies.

This is bad in Greece but its worse in the UK. I catch a lot of UK TV and the sheer number of ads for take-away's is astonishing. KFC, McDonnalds, Fast Food Chefs (with an ad about stopping people cooking over the weekend), pizzas (various) and so on.

Add to that there are the number of cooking programs on the TV. I don't think there is a minute of the day when there isn't a cooking program on on one of the channels.

The problem with those is that they make you hungry, they keep you focused on the TV and its all too easy to skip the making something delicious and healthy thing and just order-in.

Genuinely what proportion of our meals are prepared at home any more?

Even if you do stagger to the supermarket - how many pre-prepared meals are there on the shelves, in the refrigerators and frozen for you to choose from?

They're just so easy - 3 minutes in the microwave and you have a delicious.....something, chock full of sugars, salts, flavourings and preservatives with most of the actual nutrients destroyed in the preparation.

Whilst these may not be good for you the industry is smart enough to make them both extremely tasty and, imho, addictive.

Why are people overweight?

The food industry.
