When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Stage one seems to be Disillusionment.

Maybe there is.... but I don't know about it... there is that project for clergy people who wish to leave, but I don't think you'd fit in there...

Anyway, why don't we start working on it?

Let's make this step one (baby steps):
What are you disillusioned about?

Ok, I'll play. I went from:

Reform Jewish (typical American style, not very religious) -> Jewish only on holidays -> Jewish on holidays only with family -> Jewish in name only ("Secular Jew") -> Atheist -> Anti-theist

It went like this for me:
-Fundie
-"strayed" fundie
-wanting to go back to church
(a few months of reading the Bible for the third time)
-confusion and doubts
-faith gone out the window
*sadness
*a sense of loneliness (so, there's nobody out there?)
*kind of like a breakup, only the person you loved turned out to never have
existed
-freedom and happiness

Don't worry. It really does get better.
Pointing around: "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, fuck you, I'm out!"

Might as well share mine, it's not unlike Brakeman's;

Fundamentalist Christian->Moderate Christian->Inquisitive/Doubtful Christian->"I'm not like those other Christians" Christian->Undecided->Atheist->"Militant" Atheist->Anti-Theist

toddler(no beliefs) -> made to go to Sunday school -> What? Grown-ups believe this nonsense? How embarrassing. -> apatheist -> LSD and cosmic consciousness -> atheist.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

baby (goo goo gah gah) no beliefs -> punky kid who's friends whispered about "god" (wtf?) -> punky teenager vaguely deist (because something had to start the universe, didn't it?!?) -> punky 20 something apathetic don't care-ist -> bastard-like 30s -> live and let live atheist -> foul-smelling 40s post 9/11 (fuckers) anti-theist -> sweet innocent 50s belief in wine, women and song.

Mostly women, but song and wine are cool too.

It takes some time to readjust when your worldview is shattered. But you're not alone. You have a lot of people here that want to support you on your journey.

Personally, my journey went like this:
Too young for beliefs -> God is clearly imaginary -> Self-identified atheist -> Anti-theist tendencies

Really Good to hear about everyone's journeys. Appreciated Guys.

As to what I'm disillusioned about, That would be, the universe. Something I thought was a little bit special, isn't.

I Wrote a poem last night which I think expresses my feelings in a slightly self indulgent and maudlin kind of way.

Its my words.

"Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken."
