I have always thouht it had to do with gender identity and subsequent emulation; althouh, I can't discount in some cases it is done for effect as suggested earlier.
I have also known effeminate heterosexual men that grew up as the only male in the household. I can't help but think that environment plays a part. 
Okay, everyone, here is a rule that it will benefit you to follow. In the event that you see that alpha male has said something on this forum, ignore it completely. Up to you whether this means you should actually put him on your "Ignore List."
