^^This. I still double space after a period, but I think it does strip out the extra space like rasetsu said. I can't help it, I learned to write when people used this ancient invention called paper.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I learned to use two spaces in typing class. In Sweden we actually had this subject as a voluntary option.
When I got older, I realized there is no good reason to use two spaces. So I stopped. We also learned other pointless habits, like adding one or two spaces at the start of every new paragraph. I kept this habit for many years until editors and layout people started complaining about it. It was actually quite hard to shake.

Two spaces after a full stop? I've never even heard of such a thing. Definitely, totally, wrong.

I two space. But not to worry - I'll change when everyone else does.

No I definitely do it and I'm fairly certain I was taught to do so at some point in my dim past. The author goes on to say leaving two spaces between sentences is very wide spread and that the folks who do it tend to feel righteous about it.
Just wondering what people here do and how they feel about it. In particular, I wonder if anyone else who offends the gods of sentence spacing as I do can recall where they learned to do so.
I think it varies for a number of reasons, the main one is the media used. Old style typesetting used double spaces and this was carried over to the typewriter. Modern media has given us more options including larger single spaces and no space at all.
Basically there's no right or wrong, it's an aesthetic thing.

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

The single space is one of my many pet peeves.

I definitely don't get the point. I can only guess it is an artifact of a time when monospace fonts were a lot more common, such as with typewritten documents. It doesn't really serve any functional purpose now, that I can tell.

On a Mac, it is right, on a PC, it is wrong, on iOS, it is okay on Sundays and when there is a full moon.

I did get marked points off for one-spacing by my Nazi Aeronautics Prof at the Academy. He also marked me off 5 points on a 40 page lab report because twice I used the phrase "the data was" rather than the correct "the data were." How dare I.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
