Hi, I'm new

I've always been an atheist. So is my whole family apart from my uncle, who is a christian.
Even though I don't believe in god I've always found Religion quite interesting to learn about and how being an Atheist affects other peoples lives.
It was strange for me as I live in a small market town in england. And in my town and most places I've been to no ones given much care that I was an atheist.
In my small town, no one really cares what religion you are. Some people go to church, other people don't.
Its like I having a conversation with one of my friends and they asked me if I was religious and I said no, they said they were and basically said "Oh, cool" Then we just started to talk about something else.
He didn't care I was an atheist and I didn't care he was religious. Its basically like that everywhere I've been to, around the UK as I haven't been to the US that much, only twice on holiday to Orlando.
So it was so strange to me when I heard when I was young how Atheist in some countries where judged just because they were an Atheist. And how people could loose their friends and family over the whole issue of whether or not god existed.
When I was younger I know for some time I didn't even know people believed in a god. As no one had taught me about religion or talked to me about it so I just didn't know anything about it.
And thats what I wanted to find out more on. I've never ever been bullied because I was an Atheist. So yeah, personal experienced at coming out as an Atheist or realising you were an Atheist is something I'd love to know more about.

Yeah, most atheists in europe are rather ok. Oddly enough, most antagonized are the US atheists.

Boy I envy you the tolerant climate you have there. Here in the states we are over run with intolerant, self-righteous, fundamentalist xtians. Welcome and thanks for the glimpse of a more sane world.

Yeah, I guess that does seem the case but I just don't understand why? Why is not believing in god or believing god such a big issue in America?
Its so odd and interesting how different people are brought up. I've even heard some religious people in America think Atheists have no morals and some religious people in America have never even met Atheists.
Its just so hard to imagine at how different there situation is compared to mine.
If someone had told me when I was younger that some people had never talked to an Atheist before I think I would of laughed in their face or thought they were joking.

Thank you I think
Wow, so it is seriously like that over in the states? I couldn't imagine it. When I was in orlando it seemed fine but mind you I was just there because of the theme parks and I never told anyone I was an Atheist because no one asked.
And my mind was on just eating as much food as possible and going on as many rides as possible before I had to go, it was defiantly at that moment not thinking of how or why I was an atheist or god or religion of any sort.

Heya and welcome to AF! ^_^
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Welcome and enjoy this fine corner of the web.
Stick around and it'll grow on you!
In the meantime, being from a bit south from you, I almost review myself in your tale.
Except that, when I was young, I thought everyone in the world believed in this god thing.... then I realized that maybe there isn't... and, for a while, I thought I was the only one in the world thinking like that... Then I found out there was a word for this "condition", so I figured there must be many more like me... From then on, it's been a breeze!
"oh you don't believe in any of this, do you?... no matter. Could you help me with this internet connection problem?"

exactly, lol.
There was a time when I was little if someone had mentioned Jesus and god to me I would of gone "Who?"
Like seriously because no one mentioned god or anything in my family, it was because my parents didn't believe in him, so they never saw any reason to mention anything religious.
They both are also scientists so yeah...
My dads basically a chemist in a hospital and my mum works with how to create medicine's

Nice.
My parents never talked about god either, but I guess they sort of believed it, although they never went to church, so it's the same as nothing.
My grandmother, on the other hand, was always trying to push it on me... in the end, it didn't work. "thank heavens"

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke
