Until aliens showed up, yeah pretty much an accurate representation of our previous, present and future impact upon the global environment.

Well I think that last bit was just to kinda drive home the point that we're treating the world like a doormat, and we think far too highly of ourselves, and there might come a day where we'll end up being the doormats. That or it was just for humor's sake.

Artistic License I suppose in order to deliver a message.

It could've also been accomplished in a similar manner, if camera panned and zoomed out at the end... to show the Universe is actually a life-form of macroscopic proportions, and the reason why radiation is everywhere, is because the giant being is undergoing chemotherapy.
