Both, leet is the non l33t/leet spelling of l33t.

The idea behind the name I think is that you can spell it entirely with l33t. *And it sound like Elite.

Think of it like a comedy language, you just replace some letters with numbers. The name for that language is l33t or leet speak. Its a thing a lot of gamers do as a joke, sometimes you can't get the right username so you substitute letters for numbers like for me: 1N54N1TY looks like INSANITY if that is unavailable.

I think you're missing the joke. The idea is that its self deprecating humor from gamer. The idea is you play the part of the half witted overly aggressive asshole child that is the stereotype of online gamers. You end up with: "0MFG U R 5Ucch 4 n3WB LOLOLOL!11!"

Still is. Actually still very common. Gamerspeak is for when a 12 year old shows up calling everyone "FAGGIT HAKKERZ." Or just teasing friends. Last night me and some guys were on opposite teams and were taunting each other with gamerspeak.
