Atheist Reading Material

RE: Atheist Reading Material
While a bit of a tough read, I liked Michael Martin's "The Case Against Christianity", wherein he systematically dismantles all of the major tenets of Christianity.

I bought that book when I was about thirteen, got through a few chapters, and then my Christian parents took it away from me. Undecided I wish I still had it as I would read it again.

I had such a hard time sticking with this book that I'm still not finished with it.

How come? Anything in particular that you can recall? (Also, it's only the length of a short essay, if I remember correctly?)

Irreligion by John Allen Paulos, is a great book. From a mathematics standpoint.

But you cannot go wrong with Harris, Hitchens, Dennett, or Dawkins.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Atheism: The Case Against God, by George Smith; should be available on Kindle. It's also a free PDF.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

I went into the library and searched the religion section, I was disappointed the only books there were books made by theologians or religious people (Popes, etc.). I searched the science and exact sciences section, no book aimed at disproving the god idea.

My grandmother is like that. She's rather remove everything that goes against the bible than actually study it and compare similar mythologies and such.

The devil is insidious like that. Getting a guy (in the case of Michael Martin) to go to a fancy-pants school such as Harvard and get all educated just so he can trounce God's Word.

Meanwhile, God, as usual, was utterly silent on the topic.

If their belief is so fragile as to not withstand anything counter to the belief, it ought to give the believer pause. But, it doesn't.

RE: Atheist Reading Material
There are lots of things about religion that should raise red flags, but for some reason religion has yet to be snuffed out. Since when is it ever a good idea to just take someone's word for it that they're a good person? Why is it a good idea to continue believing in something that doesn't hold up well to scrutiny? The standard procedure of dealing with people that don't believe you about your god is to silence them. Kill them if need be. that's clearly stated in the bible.

If someone in the modern day wrote a book about a character, and this character did the kinds of things that Yahweh/Jesus did in the bible, do you think it would be difficult to convince people that this was the hero? That we should sympathize and root for this person? I think it would be very hard, especially if you attempt to market it to children. Change the names, and maybe make the acts a little different so it's not so obvious, but the character of this person is the same. then get your book published and have them put it in the Y7 section. Maybe Y14. See how that works.

When the inevitable backlash from moral guardians hits, tell them it was inspired by the events of the bible. If this hasn't been done before, someone should really get on it.

The one I have is a collection of essays.

I think it was just too abstractly philosophical. I have a bit of a hard time with Dennet and Harris, too, for that reason, but I suspect it has to do with writing style and the circumstances surrounding my reading it: I was probably reading it before I went to bed at night so I'd fall asleep reading it and not remember what I read the next day... Undecided

I might give it another try after I whittle my book queue down (it's currently about 15 books long). I've banned myself from the bookstore until I get these damned things read, can't be buying no more! :p

^^-- YES!! Such a good book!! Not very big, either, a short read.

That was one of the first books I ever read on atheism when I was 16/17.

The very first book in the atheism realm I ever read was some book showing what a crock of shit creationism is. Big Grin I still have it but I can't remember the name. Something like "In the Beginning" but looking that up on amazon doesn't pull up the one I'm thinking of.

My mother doesn't know I'm an atheist, I wanted to buy some books but I can't do it without her knowing. I can't find them in stores, my only chance is to import a copy translated either to portuguese or english, but it's hard to receive the delivery without her noticing.
