Irrational beliefs

Emmm….I could name you all the thoughts that I've had and that other users in this forum has seemed to hate. Or think that I am crazy for thinking that:
  • That atheist churches should rethink in a name change(churches? really?)
  • That porn acting don't require any professional skill. (You just need to be attractive and the guts to perform sexual activities in front of a camera)
  • That if you've meet Bryan Fisher or another christian extremist in despair you should rethink before helping him and the how.
  • That the appearance of Virgin Mary by assuming that she was a beautiful person is unfounded.
  • That they don't like my smileys.
  • That batman ain't invincible.
To be honest I don't see the problem with those thoughts.
However you wouldn't believe the amount of resentment, critics, disagreement, contradiction and conflict that I've received from some users around here toward those thoughts.
In part I am guilty of that because I tend to defend my statements very strongly.

But nevertheless I don't see why people got so upset of those thoughts.

Do we get to mention other users beliefs or just our own? Because there was this guy that claimed that he was God and that the Quran was the best book ever written to guide our lives.

RE: Irrational beliefs
Like everyone else, I have irrational thoughts frequently. Why wouldn't I? My "rationality" is firmly grounded in an eons-long evolutionary process of descent from "irrational" forebears. We can't simply jettison our biological baggage. That said, I do my best to hold rational beliefs and am grateful when my shortcomings are pointed out.

RE: Irrational beliefs
*Wishing things would go well/better for yourself or others
*Believing in or offering other people 'luck'

I have thought about the first one many times. I have also wished people "good luck" many times.....particularly after becoming an atheist. I mean I cannot say "I'll pray for you" anymore. Have also made the comment "I'll keep my fingers crossed".

And honestly, I don't care who thinks these two are irrational. Don't even get me started on the things I've seen on these atheist sites, that I consider irrational. Read Big Grin

@OP - On what basis did you decide these were irrational thoughts/beliefs?

Out of curiosity, I looked up irrational thinking & beliefs and did not find the things on your list anywhere.

I'd ask for honesty but I know I'm not going to get that, just try to be as honest as you can.

For this poll, irrational thoughts include;

Comments welcome.

I'm taking the lazy way out...

"Wishing things would go well/better for yourself or others"
I think most people, myself included, will plead guilty on this on. But, I've learned that if you wish in one hand and shit in the other, you wind up with a handful of shit.

"Believing in or offering other people 'luck'"
Nope.

"Some form of universal karma or other universal energies/vibrations (not scientific)"
Used to believe there was some type of reward system built into the universe. Until the universe taught me better.

"Superstitions or superstitious behaviour (lucky socks, black cats, 'never fail' items used for dates, Friday 13th, crossing fingers, blowing dice before you throw them, etc.)"
Never was much of one for superstition. I've blown on dice though. Not because I thought it would help, but because (at the time) I thought that was just the way you do it.

"Ghosts or spirits"
Nope.

"Conversing with deceased loved ones (including pets)"
Conversing with? No. Thinking my dead loved ones can actually hear my voice or thoughts? No. Getting out my phone to give mom a call because I just saw something I think she would find funny or interesting. Yes, especially when I'm tired and not thinking straight, but less and less with time. I still remember the first time I actually dialed the number and got... "We're sorry, the number you have called...." Brought back the fact that mom was dead in brutal fashion.

I know it isn't true, but I'm stuck on thinking this: Horses evolved for the sole purpose of doing me harm. And I mean specifically ME. They clearly have no other possible function in nature, so therefore they all want to kill me. There it is.

Oh, and if I'm playing poker, I have to crack my knuckles during the deal to ensure I get a good hand.

Rubbish. Bats are lovely creatures. Fascinating, efficient, industrious, and so on.

Horses, on the other hand, are evil minions of the Horse Overlord, and they spend all of their time practicing various ways to cripple or kill me.

I've never been bitten by a bat, but I have been bitten by hundreds of mosquitoes.

Bat communities eat tons of them every night Thumb up
