No, it is quite serious. There are Muslim students at Yale and unfortunately Ayaan Hersi Ali has long been a target of far too many Muslims. I am quite sure these students would not advocate the violence of 9/11 or Isis, but are still like moderate and liberal Christians often do, claim it is about hate rather than listen to her logic.

Orthodox Jews have their sexism and they also mutilate babies. Some sects of Sikh and Hindu, Mormon and LDS and Amish have gender rolls for women. And when was the last time you heard of a a female Dali Lama or female Pope? It wasn't that long ago that Christianity was as barbaric as far too much of the east is still today. Even Christianity still today in Africa has it's own tribal wars with Islam and pockets of them like "The Lord's Resistance Army" uses violence and rape to dominate non Christians. The west became civil in spite of religion not because of religion. The east is simply still stuck in the past.
