You clearly have no idea. The games are marketed towards children, and they employ operant conditioning to shape behaviour towards spending more and more. It's really that simple.
If you really don't believe me then read this paper written in 2001 by John Hopson - "the head of User Research at Bungie and has been the lead researcher for a wide variety of games ranging from AAA blockbusters (Halo, Age of Empires) to small indie games (Trials HD, Shadow Complex). He's also the author of a number of articles on the intersection of research and games, including the infamous 'Behavioral Game Design'. John holds a Ph.D. in Behavioral and Brain Sciences from Duke University and is currently the chairman of the IGDA Games User Research SIG."
I quote:
"There are numerous other things that influence players, but the basic patterns of consequences and rewards form the framework which enable all the rest. By understanding the fundamental patterns that underlie how players respond to what we ask of them, we can design games to bring out the kind of player we want."

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK
"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

The simple fact is that you dont need to spend a penny to play it. If that makes it a scam then so be it. I'm not arguing any more.

I never said "you need to spend money" I said it employs operant conditioning to shape your behaviour and to cause at-risk people to respond to it in an addictive way. And that's exactly what it's designed to do.

Free to play, pay to win games are the new norm.
Me, I refuse to pay, so when it gets stupidly difficult to beat the random number generator, I just stop playing.
Happened with the facebook game Farm Heroes Saga... and I think it's happening with Candy crush as well... I still play world of tanks as it has a nice balance between what you gain by paying and skill with the free stuff.
As for mobile games, I use the same rule of thumb: pay for nothing... if they ask for money to keep playing uninstall.
My kids learned the best practices from their dad: have fun, if it says "pay", don't click it and play something else.... even if they do click it, I've never put any credit card info on there, so they'd have no luck.

Morons.
That doesn't make it a scam. It's people's own prerogative if they want to waste their money on these things, just like gambling.

No it's not because many of the players are children.

Absolutely. That's why a lot of RPGs like WOW and Everquest are going free-to-play: they know that the kind of people who can get hooked on the carefully-controlled reinforcements with diminishing returns are eventually going to spend some money for "extras."

It's deliberate psychological manipulation, not essentially different than experiments done on the punishment/reward mechanisms of rats and monkeys.
The difference is that when this kind of experiment succeeds, people end up with a compulsive behavior that they never expected to have, and never signed up for.
