Atheism's new political wing..
October 21, 2014 at 3:30 pm
Anyone care to join me?
Because, by definition, as an atheist, I am lacking a belief in numerous religions. Which ironically means all Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Jews... etc are too ! ( although just one fewer religion than me !)
But back to the point... isn't it time us atheists joined together as a positive force with a positive common purpose? After all, everything we hold dear... e.g. not dressing/eating/praying/fornicating/acting/living according to the rules in an old book, is being threatened... and unless we act together we'll get tsunami'd !! (made that last word up... but Shakespeare made a few words up in his time !)
So we form non theist political parties and promote secularism and humanism first... and become the world's biggest pressure group?
As I said.... who's in?

If you're American, the Secular Party of America might be what you're looking for.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

I keep my politics separate from my (lack of) religious beliefs. I will not vote for obviously religious wingnuts ... but that doesn't mean anything else.

I'm in the UK too and a member of the national secular society.
There are atheist groups around too but Ive always found it difficult to see how we, as atheists, can form a group in an official capacity based on our atheism.
Besides I've got all you assholes to deal with, and a man can only take so much, heheh :p

All covered by secularism and the B/NSS, in my experience.
Issue is that halal (and Kosher) meat is now a legislative exemption, so it'd require more than a pressure group but an active political lobbying campaign. And nothing will happen because the UK Govt would never upset the apple cart on anything Islam related, wrongly in my opinion.
The UK is in a curious position with regards to secularism because, on the one hand, it's an increasingly non-religious society that pays nothing more than lip service to the religious institutions of old. On the other, we have a massive faith school sector that is funded almost entirely by the state, and those very same religious institutions are still really prevalent in every day political decision making (Lords spiritual).
as secularists I think if we concentrated on these key issues things like Halal would come under the firing line more and more. Currently the massive and overwhelming popular opinion against them has little effect on government policy.

What do you think we should do then?
