When I go to church they talk about the God of love and redemption......but I reflect on the God of logic and reason. Church is a tribal thing where you need to go through the motions, but you don't need to worship God at all or worship the God they worship.

Confessions: Going to Church for Xmas this Year
|
Probably won't go to church, but I have christmas cookies in the house, I have a cheap and rusty lighted deer in the front yard and a wreath on the door I bought from the food pantry fundraiser. (OK, one of the guys there is really really movie star handsome and I wanted to look generous while ogling his supple hotness)
I don't mind christmas letters from relatives, the REALLY good ones are unintentionally funny. I remember going christmas caroling when I was a kid and one elderly couple we sang to were crying before we had hardly started. I LOVE the new LED christmas lights, the colors are so pure, and the driving electronics are more sophisticated these days, and I am positive the gaudy tackiness offends Jeebus. Wish it would snow. Everything outside is brown, and until it gets covered in snow I feel I have to be outside working.
all i have to say is good luck do not fall for any of it just enjoy the stories.

I do not think it is a bad idea, maybe a poor choice but not bad.
The last time I was in a church, back in the 70s, I freaked out at the droning prayers and just knew I did not belong in there. I left with my shadow trying to catch up to me.
You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.

All I could picture was some old black & white horror flick and just waiting for the demons to arise out of the mist.

I always think it's funny when Atheists fret over whether or not to read the bible, qu'ran or go to church to keep some relative happy. I could go to church and it wouldn't have an affect on my beliefs. Actually I went to a 7th day Adventist Church pretty randomly about 3 years ago. I found it as uncompelling and boring as I found church when I was a child. However I also learned a little bit about what 7th day Adventists believe, got a free lunch and personally observed how old everyone is church was. Nothing spiritual happened, I wasn't converted, I was never close. There isn't anything wrong with going to Church as an Atheist. It is just silly and probably boring. Nothing magic happens in a church building. I find it rather similar to going to a political rally for a candidate you don't agree with. You could just be there to inform yourself better on someone else's opinion.
If you are struggling with your beliefs that is a different matter, but something totally independent of going to church with your dad. If that's the case just sit down and think about what you believe and what makes sense to you. That's all you can really do. P.S. There is no God.
Nothing wrong with going to church. The religion might be loopy, but church moms make the best Christmas cookies.
