Got me beat, but then I've never had to defend a magic book.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Could it be that you've never checked out the etymology of 'barbarian'?
Could it be that you do not know they came much later and by that time the Roman Empire was a somewhat Christian empire?

What the hell are you talking about? They? Who are 'they'? Barbaros was in use in multiple Greek sources long before the Roman Empire existed. Though at first is was more or less a neutral descriptive term signifying little more than non-Greek, it became a pejorative after the Greek/Persian wars.
In any case, I guess I have my answer to my question.

It shows best when you look at the city of Rome. It had one million inhabitants at it's height, but around the year 1000 only about 20.000 were left. The reason for this fundamental downfall, these stupid fucks weren't even able or willing to maintain the aqueducts. Add to this the church claiming to have the monopoly on education and you get a world of ignorance, since they didn't educate the people at all and hardly anyone could even write their own name until the dawn of the Rennaissance. Medicine didn't evolve beyond Galen all through the Middle Ages since the church forbid autopsies and anatomic studies.
Historians refer to the time between 400CE and 1000CE -- when religion ruled almost every aspect of life in Western Europe -- as The Dark Ages.
Coincidence? I think not.

Could it be that you never actually checked Roman history? I wouldn't consider an utter defeat of an insurgency a most problem case. For the Romans, I guess, the insurrection of Arminius in 9 AD was the bigger problem, since it cost them three legions with nothing to show for.
Oh, you! Waving around those facts like they mean something.

GC, is there really anything more to say in support of thinking the bible is the infallible word of God other than wishful thinking? I mean, you can date it and track its authors and all the councils convened to decide what is and isn't included. But surely none of that speaks to its being the word of God apart from the opinion of 'experts'. I'm fine with you thinking of it that way but I respect Christians more who are more mindful in discriminating between faith and knowledge.

Rome kicked Carthage's ass 3 times....just like the jews, Ronny.
The Punic Wars lasted for less than 50 years and the Romans won all 3. Rome and Parthia were deadly enemies for centuries and the Sassanid successors to the Arsacids inflicted a series of stinging defeats on the Romans in the mid-3d century which came close to destroying the empire.
The Sassanids were still fighting the Byzantines tooth and nail in the 7th century AD ripping each other up so badly that they opened up a gap for the fucking Arabs to expand into.

One of the best verses in the Bible is Titus 1:14 (CEV) = "Don’t pay any attention to any of those senseless Jewish stories and human commands. These are made up by people who won’t obey the truth."

Yes, but I'm not sure why you're sharing that with me. My point earlier had to do with how 'barbarian' was how the Greco-Roman world saw everyone else, whether in a pejorative sense or not. This would have included Persians, North Africans, Germanic and Gallic tribes, Jews -- all of them.
Anyway, carry on.

That's grade school stuff mini!
btw... sorry I'm late! Merry Christmas!
The war with Carthage Honed the Roman fighting machine, gave them mastery of the sea and bequeathed them a vast empire. The war with Carthage was the start of the empire not it's biggest defeat.
The ones who had the lasting Impact were the Goths, Vandals and Hun.

The origin was that anything that wasn't said in their language sounded like bar bar to the greeks and romans, hence barbarian. People who just go bar bar.
It's the enquivalent of saying Chinese just go ching chong ching chong.
It's razy lacism.
