What will it take to convert you?
#61
RE: What will it take to convert you?
For a full and honest conversion, I need to be given equal powers to the God so I would know with confidence that I was not being misled by a demon.
OTOH, I have no idea how I'd be able to tell if I actually had equal powers and was not being misled by a demon. I suspect that knowledge would come with the omniscience thingie.
OTOOH, I still don't know how I'd know I was omniscient.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

But god is lazy remember.

I prefer the word 'callous'.

You'd... Erm... well, in that case you'd know that, too, and so on, recursively Smile

But yes, I think an intelligence sufficiently advanced and powerful could possibly manipulate you into thinking you are omniscient...

None, right?

Like I say, it would depend on the nature of the encounter. Not sure what my questions would be but if I felt the answers were legit, why not? Presumably I would bring up the possibility of its being an advanced alien race. But really, if the show is convincing enough what does it matter?

I think it matters a great deal whether we are dealing with a very convincing cosmic impostor or the real deal. If not to you directly, then for the sake of humanity: many will follow the latter whereever it leads, and will take it as a source of absolute truth and morality, but not necessarily the former.

Well there's this order of begging monks I'd like to tell you about...

There's absolutely nothing. With evidence you could possibly prove the existence if a god but you couldn't convince me to care about its existence any more than it has cared about mine. (Which is not at all)

Sounds good to me, but I wouldn't need to beg, I would have a million dollars.

Funny, many of the "tv evangelists" make well over that.

An anecdote:
I collect watches. I spend many hours a day researching them, to the point that I can reliably spot a fake rolex from a distance of 10 feet.

I attended a Catholic service during christmas with my now ex girlfriend. The priest drones on and on about the commercialism and "bastardization" of the holiday and how we're a bunch of greedy fuckers who should give all our money to the poor.
All while wearing a two tone Rolex submariner with a msrp of ~ 12000.00 us. It was pretty damn hard to take him seriously after noticing that.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

Drat. That puts us back to the indistinguishable from lobotomy answer so ably demonstrated by online theists.
