What I don't understand is what the plan was with the supermarket thing. If I understabd right, they bust in and take hostages and just wait and make threats until police have to eventually storm them. Did they have any demands? What end game were they hoping for?

Sadly the Quran glorifies being killed in battle, I believe. So that can be motivation enough.

What's to understand? They wanted to die in Allah's name, and picking a Jewish market meant that they could burnish their posthumous credentials amongst the fanatics, I think.

It's too bad they weren't captured alive to spend the rest of their lives in ignominy, but like Brian37 said, killing them ain't a bad way to end it. It's a pity that more innocents were killed, but it could have been worse -- I understand that 16 survived the ordeal.

I see, yeah I thought that was probably the case. The first attack at least had a twisted purpose, this one just seemed like suicide by cop.

I don't think they think of it as "suicide by cop", myself. I think it's more a matter of ticket-punching. "We're terrorists, this is how we're supposed to go out", that sort of thing. I could well be wrong, but death is glorious to fools.

Yeah, I guess my phrase doesn't sum up how they view it, but what it was in reality. I can't see what other outcome they could have in mind.

I'm very interested how Europe will handle this. I get the feeling backing down further in fear and hiding cartoons is off the table now.

I really like the shouldering up I'm seeing, from an ocean away. I hope this can at least be a catalyst to inspire more freethinkers to speak out, loudly and offensively, against radical Islam. I also hope that the moderates Minimalist and I were arguing about earlier see the opening and get to work some more. This mood won't last long; they need to seize the moment.

I saw another one speaking out on the news, and reports of others doing so. I'm really impressed to see that. Bring it on, moderates! Drag them into this century. Hell, this side of year 1,000 would be an improvement.

I'm always amazed at how pissy all these radicals get when it comes to their god. I'm not only talking about Islam, but about the radicals of all the religions. It basically means their god is too weak to fend for himself. Isn't it enough that dissenters are threatened with eternal damnation? What can they possibly add to that threat? If they actually believe in their scripture, that is. All this radicalism is basically admitting that their own faith isn't that strong after all.
