An Example of American Hysteria

RE: An Example of American Hysteria
Ok, so no law was violated, but if a company policy was, then the company have every right to dismiss both the supervisor and the employee.

Nothing bad happened this time, but what if the pilot on the other end was in some kind of trouble, what if his plane had been taken over? This isn't the kind of job where people can afford to mess around.

What if a plane were taken over?

What the fuck could an air traffic control agent do to help with that situation?

And why are we assuming that the father was not listening to the pilots and actually doing his job? Do they issue only one set of headphones to the traffic control towers now?

Er, let's see. Contact someone official in order to try and defuse the situation, or if the need be, shoot the plane down instead of having another 9/11? What if there was a struggle in the cockpit, and you've got a kid there completely oblivious? Pilots put their lives in the hands of ATCs, because when you have a fuckload of planes taking off and landing at the same location, you can't afford any screwups.

I have no idea if he was listening or not, and it is irrelevant. If something did happen, and everyone had to go on high alert, the last thing you want is a kid there.

There are certain jobs you just wouldn't take your kid to, and this is one of them.

I disagree. If the supervisor gave permission the employee is covered. "Policies" are not laws or regulations. They are implemented by management.

If management wishes to discipline the supervisor that is their decision. I spent 25 years as a steward and officer of a federal sector union and there were plenty of times when a manager's decision violated some policy or other. They may have "disciplined" the manager but they sure as hell never told the union about it.

Of course, it is also true that we do not know what permission the supervisor granted. There is a bit of a difference between merely approving the kid to be in the work area and approving letting the kid get on the microphone.

RE: An Example of American Hysteria
At a forum site, where I was banned for life several times I had written this item about my work and family day:

Family day at the Nuke Plant

Why they have these stupid PR events I’ll never know. Apparently those who approve of these events don’t have to mend and care for those who attend. It never fails that there will always be some country bumpkin who will take his family and parade them around with pride to his fellow workmates. Meanwhile they are comparing his relatives to their favorite character in the movie “Deliverance.” After a while it sinks in- Hey! Dad really does look a little like Ned Beatty and you’d wished he’d stop walking around the house in his underwear, even if he does pay the mortgage.

The kids are the greatest. They love to do things and explore. During the cursed Beanie Baby craze, the little snot gobblers would drag those things wherever they went, including the Nuke Plant on family day. One such incident involved a young child tossing his Beanie baby into the air as he walked along. As fate would have it-the cursed item landed on top of an overhead light- the black hole of contamination attraction.

Upon retrieving the item- not a small feat in itself- it was determined that Mr. B. Baby should be dusted off and cleaned (decontaminated) before returning it to said child. As it turns out the fuzzy little critter didn’t want to come clean. To make matters worse, the young boy started crying for his Beanie Baby . Three technicians were assigned to the task of preserving and returning the little fuzzy duck to the rug rat.

The item was “almost” clean, but did not pass the DOE limits, but did pass DOT limits. It was suggested by someone with commercial experience to return the item as the levels would pass as “clean” at most commercial nuclear facilities and it would shut the brat up, besides it was some office type kid- not one of the crew.

Eventually the Beanie Baby was returned. Just don’t ask me any more questions.
