true belief - well some sort of actual intellectual commitment to what you're professing to believe. Like you actually understand what you're saying. If you said you were a fan of bananarama I'd at least expect you to like them for some reason you could relate rather than a fan by association of say, your dad who was a fan once.

Who isnt a fan of bananarama. All together now. Last night I was dreaming..... You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid. Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.
It's impossible to try and come up with any stats for "true" believers and nonbelievers. For every Catholic teenager shedding his belief in Science class there could be a deist physicist who can't shake that nagging feeling that there's a greater power.
A scientist friend of mine, whom I've had many philosophical discussions about atheism and existentialism and the like, recently confessed that he believes "in something" but not in tune with any religion. Maybe it was fr0d0?

that would be very awesome if it was 95%, or at least the 50% that actually shows their disbelief...
ahh.. what a world..

"Extraordinary claims, require extraordinary evidence" - Carl Sagan "I don't believe in [any] god[s]. I believe in man - his strength, his possibilities, his reason." - Gherman Titov, Soviet cosmonaut
I bet there is only 5% of the world that are truely atheists! 95% of the world just can't grasp Atheos like I do.
Drug induced atheism... I guess so!
It has nothing to do with drugs. It is pure logic and digging into the esoteric message of not god.
Ah cwl. Can I haz some?

Why does it matter?
The word 'atheism' is all but useless as a meaningful description. There is no way of knowing what people 'really' believe. Humans a species are superlative self deceivers, and rationalisers, not to mention bare faced liars. If we judge individuals and/or groups only on behaviour it's usually virtually impossible to tell the difference between atheists and believers. Being atheists doesn't stop us from being stupid... Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day
