It holds about the same weight, I agree with you, but religion is a well established part of our evolution.
Think about the mindset of the first humans who came up with the idea.
I have, and you answered your statement towards me, for me. That's just it, it's an idea.
What makes you think religion is "perfected" (which it's not) and is a "more perfected" idea than any other irrational belief? Because it has a book? Because people have followed it for many, many years?
I like the way you think!
...But please stop thinking, it's not you.

there comes a time in your life that you need to understand why people might believe in God, and not just simply dismiss it as crap.
People don't just believe in crap for the sake of it.
It's not that easy.

Of course it's an idea. but it's an idea that primitive man came up with long before you were born.
Respect religions place in our evolution at least.
Even if it is sh************t.

People don't just believe in crap for the sake of it.
Most people don't just lie for the sake of it either, but does that change the fact that when they lie, the content of their lies are mostly just crap.

Cannibalism has been around since tens of thousands of years before YOU were born also, but this is not tens of thousands of years ago, this is after you have been born. Would you care to respect the place of cannibalism in our evolution and allow some people's evolutionary cannibal instinct to impact you?

Even though religion's past isn't part of our "evolution," going by your logic... Then sure. I should also be thankful and totally accept the many deaths in the world, Hitler, all the wars, etc.
Remember! Without Hitler, you would be who you are today, jason56. Remember, it's part of your evolution. (Somehow)

because WE exist!
Short answer.
That's why dogs don't have a heaven. And my dog deserves it - poor bugger hasn't evolved enough to imagine one yet.
We exist so leprechauns and the flying spaghetti monster exist. Okay, gotcha.
...AND HEY! All dogs go to heaven!
No. Religion is slightly more perfected than the idea of the flying spaghetti monster and leprechauns.
It holds about the same weight, I agree with you, but religion is a well established part of our evolution.
Think about the mindset of the first humans who came up with the idea.
So like Icesage touched on, all the fictional characters humans have created exist to then right? Santa? Easter bunny? Unicorns? The only difference between them and a god is a god is a fictional character that has been used to answer the biggest question of "why are we here?" instead of just who delivers toys to children, that's the ONLY difference and why people grow out of Santa yet still cling on to god as a way of answering something so big.
And please don't try and claim religion is part of our evolution. Evolution is meant to help a species adapt to it's environment and help the species survive, religion has done nothing of the sort. It's only been around for so long because it started when people were superstitious and gullible enough to buy it, and it's been passed down from parents to children, and children will believe anything you tell them, please see santa.

No Thor, but Loki here....
A finite number of monkeys with a finite number of typewriters and a finite amount of time could eventually reproduce 4chan.
