Room 101
What would you put in Room 101?
Here are my offerings:
1. "child/young person/young dude/ princess on board " car stickers.Sad.
2. " Big Brother " tv show. Tasteless/talentless wannabes acting outrageously.Entertaining? For the brain-dead maybe.Hate it.
3. " Xmas ". Can't escape it, the false bonhomie, the expense, the pressure. And why don't people grow out of believing in God like they do of Santa?
4. " The British Royal Family " and all the sycophancy that surrounds it. Can you think of a more useless-to-humanity job than being a BBC " royal correspondent "?
5. Bob Geldof/Bono. Need I expand???
6. " Male British working-class wedding kit ". Why do they all now dress up like the upper classes in tails, toppers, canes, even the young lads?[/size]
HuhA man is born to a virgin mother, lives, dies, comes alive again and then disappears into the clouds to become his Dad. How likely is that?

Though I've never done it I don't have a problem with the "child on board" stickers (but only them, the other suck) because I think children are important. I like Christmas and I have to say I quite admire Geldoff (he lives in my town). I like Christmas ... I like the good cheer, the food, the giving of gifts ... I know it's illogical for an atheist but I just like it.

What would I put in?

1. Yeah the Royal Family for sure.
2. All reality TV shows
3. God, Allah, Yahweh & everything that goes with them ...bring back Zeus, bring back Atlas, bring back Rah, bring back Odin, bring back Quetzalcoatl and the sacrificing of young virgins on altars of blood, bring back that really old time religion [GRIN]; give us some gods who actually did something Smile
4. Share traders (I detest anyone who has a bob on themselves coz they trade shares in the city).
5. Modern computers ... I really miss the time when computers were relatively simple, when I could do things no one else could from the command line. I still can, it's just no longer as relevant.
6. Mobile phones ... absolutely no question, they are the tools of the evil one (God).
7. Chavs ... because they irritate me!

I'm sure I'll think of more!

I would have only 2 things in there:

1. That multimillion dollar corporation of environmental terrorists called Greenpeace.
2. Mother Theresa

Me too! I love Xmas decorations, Xmas music, Xmas family gatherings, Xmas TV shows (anybody remember those Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman clay style animated tv movies from the 80's?) even Santa Clause. But I could do without the commercialisation of the whole process, or the religious layers. It's a shame Xmas has become politically correct over these past couple of years in Australia, it's not what it used to be. There are regulations on what decorations can be put up, what music can be played etc - it's all a bit depressing, I miss the 80's Xmas!! (bring back those retro decorations in outlandish colours :p )

Well I won't win any elections or popularity contests, that's for sure. But the Dutch aren't that judgmental if you get the chance to explain your position, and I know I am not alone in my opinion on both. In fact apart from not believing in gods that is the only thing Christopher Hitchens and I agree on. Smile

leo, talking of Hitchens, one of the " triumphs " of the Tony Blair ( know him? ) legacy in the uk is that he made the Labour Party in the uk so rightwing that socialists like myself found ourselves having to agree on some issues with far right people like CH !

JJ, so what you're saying is xmas is fine if you ignore the religious significance? I could agree with that, possibly, but shouldn't that mean a namechange/other reason to party?
Also, what do you mean by " politically correct "?
I must be one of the minority who defends pc because it started out with the best of intentions, had some major successes ( racism, feminism ) but has become a catchall for rightwing bigots.

RE: Room 101
Into Room 101, I would put:
1. Faith, (covers Religon, other cults and pseudoscientific faiths such as 'The Secret' And 'Astrology'. Also dowsing actuallyTongue)
2. really, really, old people in cars going 'round corners really slowly.
3. Annoying pricks.
4. The people who refuse to make any new 'old style games' and make it work. Or who don't ever make as great FPS single player level design. With all the brilliant classic puzzles and keys. And what 'HeXen' revolutionized (at least for me) with the 'hub' system and choice of multiple characters in an FPS. I'm not blaming people for not doing this, things move on its understandable. Bit it pisses me off that noone makes and great single player puzzly mode in FPS like they used to. And also I miss the old style point and click adventures! And some of the old platformers/side scrollers! It seems as though there was much more variety before. At least RTS and 'fighters' (tekken, dead or alive etc) have survived! If not it would be very sorry if all there was, was new style FPS and RPGS! Oh dear! The new style FPS (halo and aftewards) is brilliant don't get me wrong. But imo they're multiplayer games. I think the old shooters kick the crap out of them single player. Much more puzzly. And also lots of enemies that you can kill in 1 shot with shotguns or just a few chaingun or pistol or whatever shots! Swarms of them! Rather than just a few enemies (in comparison with the old shooters) that you have to shoot repeatedly and it gets boring. I like New FPS for multiplayer but old for single.
5. People who aren't at least reasonbly nerdy. People who act like its cool to not read books or play computer games 'too much' and uncool to be nerdy. Hey if its nerdy to have a lot more fun than the people who aren't gaming/making music/reading great books! Then I'm nerdy! They're missing out a lot and apparently these people who are 'completely non-nerds' are quite boring. All the coolest people I know are nerdy and like computer games. But hey maybe thats because I'm a nerd.
But nerd is more a negative word for 'Geek', I prefer geek, geeks are cool lol.
6. Comedies that people find funny and are really popular, (friends or whatever) but if they actually looked around for a bit or were less secluded, or actually understood witty comedy...basically they just don't seem to understand how much better comedy can be. I mean I even saw this 'friends' episode when one of them had a turkey on their head ( I saw it years and years ago when friends was pretty much new, so I can't remember who), and Mr. Bean had already done that before, and it was way way way way, way way way way better done.
Here's a clip to go with this last 1 ('6.'), Hugh Laurie on friends:

P.S: ABOFAL:>friends.

Ditto on the religion and commercialism ... it bugs the living [expletive deleted] outta me when I see Christmas advertised like 3 months early! Same on TV when, the moment Christmas is over they start advertising holidays or Easter or some such.

Kyu
Oh yeah ... and another couple of things to go in (inspired by EVF's post)!

People who think it something to be proud of that they are scientifically ignorant.
What they refer to over here as the "Australian Question Intonation" or AQI which is where people make a statement and raise the intonation at the end to make it sound like a question ... bleeding irritating!

And did I mention mobile phones? I must have done!

And people who want to "effect" something and see what its "affect" is ... grrrr!
