Stephen Fry on God

RE: Stephen Fry on God
Stephen Fry's response was polite and not rude. The reason that some Christians get mad is because they view any criticism of their faith as being a personal attack. For some people even hearing that someone is an atheist is the same as persecuting Christians.

Yep, when I attack religion or god claims, one should look at that blasphemy like two people going to a movie and I am the one going "That movie sucked".

Believers need to understand that we are attacking bad claims as far as scientifically and claims of morality. But it is not an attack on them or their rights.

It would be like if you had a friend who said "The New York Yankees won the Superbowl". I might like you but the claim itself is utter bullshit.

It might be better for the believer to consider maybe they are wrong and are merely in it because of a bad case of warm fuzzies and wishful thinking.

This is what you sound like to atheists.

You "You watch out, Superman will beat you up when he get's here".

Been there done that. The threats you make about what will happen to us is no different or hollow a threat than when Muslims do it. You could threaten us with Mickey Mouse and it means the same thing to us.

Why should we feel or be threatened by what amounts to basically you protecting a fantasy with your own ego?
When I post, I’m not trying to prove, persuade, cajole or influence board members to believe in God’s existence or change their worldview to a creation model. Why I am posting is: to give the Christian old earth perspective. So if you feel ‘threaten’, it’s entirely self-imposed. Think about it, if God gave people free will to choice, I should and do fully endorse the exercise thereof. After all, God made the Garden-of-Eden very good, and then He may it even better by introducing ‘free-will’, so far be it from me, to interfere with that. Hell is a Christianity doctrinal subject and should be ripe for discussion without it being construed as being ‘threatening’.
Here’s a suggestion: get on your hands and knees, thrust your legs backward into the plank position, hold for a minute and while doing so, tell yourself you are strong and won’t be fearful of what is message board posted…after that, you should feel empowered.

If you truly feel this way, you should be able to discuss it without appeal to the trope of "I'm right, and you'll be sorry to learn so one day."

Brian did not say he felt threatened but he did point out that hell is a meaningless threat by using a comparison to superman.

Interfere with what?

Why do you believe your god gave humans free will?

Hell is a mythological place so it is not threatening; however I do find it offensive that some people believe that their fellow humans deserve to be endlessly punished. That is pretty sick. Because there is no god you decided to follow a version that includes eternal suffering just for disagreeing with your fake god. That says something about you

Bible says the earth was created in 6 days. I don't care if you claim to be a old earth believer. That does not square with what the bible says. You are cherry picking the bible.

And no, I don't feel threatened by fictional beings but that book does contain language in it that condemns people and people do read those words and act on them. No different than if someone read Harry Potter and decided to murder someone over that. Holy books are used as weapons, and the worst part is that humans are willing to murder over these antiquated myths.

Agree, it does say 6 literal days (Yom in Hebrew); however; context is important. Genesis is definition 4 which is 'literal'. Like I mentioned, Day 7 is at least 50,000 years and counting.
http://sententias.org/2013/11/21/the-mea...in-hebrew/ - "The four definitions are 1) a portion of the daylight hours (2) the entire daylight segment of a twenty-four-hour day, (3) a twenty-four-hour day, and (4) a long but finite time period. - Unlike the modern Hebrew and English, biblical Hebrew had no other word for a finite era or epoch. The four definitions of YOM are literal definitions"

RE: Stephen Fry on God
Why would the bible be written in such an utterly confusing way right from the start? Why not just say what time periods they meant, especially if they expected the reader to somehow realize each "day" was not as long as each other "day"?

Or are you suggesting God rested for 50,000+ years? And why do you honour the sabbath if it was a 50,000 year period and nothing to do with Sunday?

In fact, God resting right now would explain a lot.
