Oh dear....Johnny Got His Gun
but for a trillion dollars it doesn't shoot.

Quote:Armed w/ only 2-10 missiles, the F-35 will be deemed "combat ready" in 2015, but won't have gun code till 2019, despite 20 million LOC

After burning through hundreds of billions in expenditures (over $300B USD to date) along its much-delayed development arc, the "joint strike fighter" (JSF) -- also known as the F-35 Lightning II -- has earned the dubious distinction of being the most expensive combat aircraft in history. But according to a new report by The Daily Beast, the spoiled self-proclaimed "superjet" can't even fire its gun. What do they mean by "gun code"? I sure hope it doesn't involve Microsoft...
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I'd guess it's the firmware controlling the cannon.

Computer code.

As the article explains further down.

Quote: Lockheed Martin apparently couldn't be bothered to write in code to connect the JSF's trigger to its gun. Air Force officials say that Lockheed Martin is telling them that it's going to take another four full years -- until 2019 -- to integrate the seemingly simple code into its web. -

How'd you like to be a pilot in a dogfight and press the trigger and get the little buffering icon on your display? Not too happy I imagine.

LOL, what is it written in... COBOL? What's so hard about:

10 If RedButton$="Pressed" then 30
20 Goto 10
30 FIRE THA FUCKEN CANNONS
40 Goto 10

The Air Force should hire me to write the firmware. I'd only take *3* more years, and charge 200 billion in overruns.

RE: Oh dear....Johnny Got His Gun
I was in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years. In that time, I often found myself wondering how such a fucked-up organization had had so much success in defense of our country. The answer came upon me suddenly: The U.S. military defends us against similarly fucked-up organizations in other countries.

That said, I feel compelled to point out that I would sure hate to have nothing defending our way of life but our clever logic and wit.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

And of course, supporters of the party of so-called fiscal conservatives will be too busy worrying about people getting food stamps to notice.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

No kidding. How many homeless could be fed and sheltered just on the cost overruns of this one project?
