Welcome back Good to see you.
The god argument you mention there is a very common one, and this is a perfect chance for me to try out something new on my website I've been working on. I was going to wait until I'd done all the categories, but this happens to be one I have finished.
Please check it out, if you don't mind! It addresses this argument in detail. If it needs any further explanation, I'd love to hear it, so I can update it further. Here's the link directly to the article:
http://robvalue.wix.com/atheism#!argumen...lity/c1831
I'm eventually going to do a glossary to explain some of the less common terms, so please ask if there's anything you're not sure of.
I'd also add further that even if you accept that there is some sort of god, why the christian god out of the inifinite number of possible gods? This is the broken compass fallacy which I haven't written yet on my site :p

No problem I'll take a look at it. I don't have stats on me to back this up but I think it's too logical to be wrong: the vast majority of people in any religion were raised as a part of that religion and therefore tend to stick to it. That's the only reason why I'm Christian

Sure Well that's another point that can be debated, but I'll leave you to have a look at this one first! Thanks very much for taking the time to check it out.
Constructive feedback is very welcome I want it to be useful so I'd like to know where it has weaknesses.

I've read the 'Lord Of The Rings' series several times, it's one of my top ten favourite books.
Could you elaborate as to where in Middle Earth these Muslims are to be found? Probably in Far Harad would be my guess, but I'm unable to find any textual support for this contention.
Boru
You're spot on. They do indeed come from Far Harad on their mumakils

Rob on your site:
I found no issues with it myself. But I can't speak for other Christians. I'm far more accepting of modern science and values than many. The only minor issue was that when you talked about the 3 kinds of gods in the 'What is God?' section, you have to realize that some people combine the God of Islam/Christianity with one of your other two options.
For example, I believe in the Christian God but also personally believe he doesn't directly interact with the universe
Fun fact: for a good time ask a hardcore fundamentalist what Noah fed the lions

Well that's brilliant, thank you very much for taking the time to check it out, I appreciate it
You are very enlightened, a breath of fresh air around here! I've all but given up debating with many theists.
Right! You are a christian deist? Wow, well I've never heard of that before. Thanks a lot for bringing that to my attention! And of course you're right, I forget that some people go for a pantheist christian god as well. I need to make it clear they can be switched about. I was wondering if I was missing any other category, some glaring omission... but I couldn't think of any.
Deism is by far the most rational form of theism in my opinion, so we're on the same page there

I like to think that's the point though. If God proved his existence to you then what role is there for faith?
I think a ton of the OT is metaphors and super hyperbole of things that happened so that they are more mythology than history. The NT is easier for me to literally believe, though the miracles can never be proven and require a leap of faith.
In terms of my relation to God, I think that He created natural laws and forces and that, unless maybe in extraordinary circumstances, He doesn't interfere with them. This is how I explain the classic "why do bad things happen to good people?" There are natural processes that God doesn't disrupt, and sometimes bad things happen.
I believe that miracles are possible, but are enacted through the existing laws and forces of the universe. Like the plagues of Exodus: I've researched it enough to know that every plague can be scientifically explained. Even the parting of the Reed (not Red) Sea can be explained by an incoming tsunami.
However the odds of all of these things happening in rapid succession as Moses, with no knowledge of modern science, was warning Pharoah of them, is too little to be pure coincidence. That's how I believe God affects the world: indirectly through nature.
I'll see if there are any more questions to answer.
Thanks guys for the warm welcome.
I was raised a Christian and as of yet I haven't been able to debunk the existence of God despite always exploring the atheist point of view. You can never prove it though. If I'd been born to atheist parents I 100% guarantee I'd be one too
Wouldn't this make you a Deist rather than a christian?

I still believe a lot of things in the Bible. Just not the insane stuff. I guess I'm a deistic Christian

How exactly do you decide what the 'sane' stuff is? Because I'd wager every non-literalist Christian would say "I don't believe the insane stuff", and yet would have vastly differing views.

I now made the changes you suggested, while making the wording on the god section more polite, which I've been meaning to do
Thanks again!
Being a deistic christian I imagine must require taking a very liberal, non-literal view of the bible. Which, again, is the most rational approach.
In fact, a deistic god is so far removed from the character portrayed in the bible, that I wonder what makes you believe in the christian god?
