Funny as fuck!

Must be depressing if you are young and hail from one of the ten states that rank below Oklahoma though.

It became a world power quite quickly. It has also done a lot of bad things, and if those bad things bother you then try not to do them. No one will be able to dig up dirt on you if you don't have dirt to dig up.

One thing I'm grateful for, specifically, in my life is that my parents took us to Iran, where I attended school for four years. Learning at a young age about the Mossadegh Affair, in which our CIA overthrew the legally elected socialist Prime Minister in 1953 -- followed shortly by seeing the 1978 Revolution up-close and personal -- made me question everything I was taught upon return to America, because everyone who hated Iran had no idea we'd inflicted an authoritarian regime on that nation and people. Most Americans had no idea that their hatred of us was justified. We propped up the Shah, we trained the SAVAK which helped keep him in power, and we got our just desserts for it.

I learned early that my country can be and often is wrong, and that has come to form my view of patriotism, which is that I love my country enough to speak up against its wrongdoings, in the hopes of making it a better place.

I have heard on Secular Talk that we've actually overthrown democratic leader, and put in dictators. So the idea of spreading democracy to the world is bullshit. At least part of the time. America is out of hand, and it's not likely to get better until we cut military funding by at least half, pull everyone back, and just do national defense.

Good video to watch, if you want to know how common the Jesus story really is.

Exactly, and not just Mossadegh in Iran. Look up Allende in Chile or the 1954 coup in Guatemala. Never mind the support we give to the House of Saud even as they repress their own folks.

I'm all for cutting back military spending. We'd save an awful lot of money by leaving South Korea and Germany (not that they're dictatorships, obviously), without increasing any risk to our own country. A strong Navy and Air Force can do most of the job defending America's interests, given that the oceans must be crossed one way or the other.

What's really funny is that studying the history of a country built upon genocide and slavery is bound to get messy yet the people who want to put a positive spin on that are accusing others of historical revisionism.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
